Hellllloooo, Ok so I know my 2x4 tacoma standard cab and bed is capable of towing 3000 pounds. I have the opportunity to buy a boat that will be right at this mark with about a 300 pound tongue weight. Has anyone had any experience towing the limit with this truck?? Does it perform well??

    Thanks

It'll handle it. It wont really enjoy it but it can do it. I have towed many boats and never had a problem with my truck. I have an 01 4x4

you should be okay... Do you have factory tow package with coolers? I reg. tow 7000 lbs with my dc 4x4 it does fine between 45-55. just remember its not what you can pull, but what you can safely stop!

Yea but I don't want to kill my 09 truck either...i love her lol. Do you guys think it's gonna put too much stress on the engine...i mean in the manual it says it is capable of towing 3000 pounds so it should do it without hurting the engine right??? And it's only 2 wheel drive.

And leave the shifter in 4th not drive, It will help it from searching for gears.

Yes it isnt going to kill the motor. Honestly you could prolly tow 4000 without killing the engine. They are over-rated by quite a bit.

Its like a bridge. It may say max capacity is 50 tons, but it probably could hold 75-80 tons

You might have a problem bc your truck is 2 wheel. The boat ramps that I have used can be very slick. I have only had to use 4x4 a few times getting up the ramp, but I also have a rear limited slip which makes using 2x4 a little easier. I think your motor will be fine. My brother towed his 18 ft bowrider (approx 3k) with his 01 Tacoma and it was a 4 as well. He really didn't have any trouble pulling it or stopping. Just be easy.

Yeah, It'll handle it... just take it easy. Make sure you use a good Class III frame-mounted hitch though... not just a ball on the bumper. I tow my 17' bowrider boat (I'd estimate around 2000-lbs. with fuel and gear) with my reg. cab 5-lugger 5-speed manual - and the handling and braking are GREAT. It feels solid as a rock. Power is decent too. The boat ramp I use is not slippery, so no need for 4WD. I just have to be careful not to roast my clutch (not a problem for you with the automatic) when pulling the boat out. Check out etrailer.com if you need a hitch (I bought the Curt). There's more info in the "Towing" forum on here too.

HAHA yea I bought a class III Curt Mfg. hitch myself online and installed it. The hitch itself prob weighs 40 pounds!! I had a bear of a time putting that thing on....should of used a car jack to support it while I bolted it in instead of my ONE arm! Sturdy hitch though....well worth the money.

Thanks! Mine is an '03 as well. I bought it new as a leftover in Feb '04. Six years and 22K+ miles later, I still absolutely LOVE it. Probably the best purchase I've ever made. I put 100 more miles on it today.

Dude... my hat's off to you if you installed that hitch by yourself! My brother and I did mine - and it still just about kicked both of our a$$es. Holding that heavy thing up while trying to get the holes aligned just right with the ones in the frame so the bolts would go in straight was a PAIN - but we finally got it. It's a very nice hitch though. Very stout and a MUCH nicer finish than on the two Draw-Tite's I've bought in the past for other vehicles.

Actually keep yours in drive... he's thinking you have a 5spd auto, not the 4spd.
Also, if you get the boat and the trucks sluggish, one mod to greatly help would be to add a limited slip and new gearing. For like $700 it can make a world of difference! (my point being, if it struggles a little you can modify your truck some to help out without going crazy and selling it). My PreRunner with the manual and 4.10 runs fine with my boat, but it's under 2k lbs wet.

only thing I will add is: Give yourself PLENTY of braking room.. brake early and give yourself plenty of space between you and the car in front of you

I have towed a camper that weighs approximatly #2700, with the truck fully loaded as well with junk. This is a far heavier combo that what you are suggesting, and I had no problems at all. The engines pulls smoother in 4th, and you must rev it a little. Your level of satisfaction will correlate with your level of driving skill.

And the trailer should have brakes. But I thought that was a given....

Even with trailer brakes you need to give more room and brake early. Its not going to stop like theres nothing back there even with the trailer brakes.
