Plastidip is cheap. That being said i have 2 issues with the OR matte plastic:
    1. Matte plastic always ment base model. People praise textured plastic flares, why has nobody put the textured plastic bumper from a utility package on their OR yet?
    2. Flares are one of the first things damaged on a trail. When they are painted you can buff them and get them back to looking good 90% of the time. With textured plastic you can....? Replace them when they get scratched.

I also wonder how long before the black starts to fade and become a light grey. Yes they can be painted or dipped, just another thought.

    Like, so many.
It's funny to me how vocal some people are about Sport vs OR. They are both outstanding trucks and quite capable off road. The OR does have more features. I see less Sports in my area, which is nice since I drive one. Either one will treat you right.

@RIDERED67 so they have the same sway bar? I was under the impression, from what I read on TW, that there is a difference.

Some people like the Sport look and others like the Off Road look. You can't go wrong with either one, it's a still a Tacoma.

For me it will come down to price that I can negotiate. 2 dealers and each has a truck I am interested in. 1 has a Sport and 1 has an OR, same trim levels. For my uses the OR has nothing over the Sport.

I'd actually gladly take the utility rear bumper. I dipped the plastic "chrome" caps on mine.

In any case, in matters of taste there is no right answer. You like painted flares. I don't. Who is right? Both of us.

Kind of funny how the Pro mixes elements of both.

Kinda shoots a hole in "base model" thought process.

These trucks are platforms for the buyer to build upon to their liking.

Comparing an off-road stock is useless if you plan to upgrade the suspension anyway down the road.

Comparing an elocker / open diff is useless if you plan to have matching front and rear lockers.

Comparing 1/8 steel + plastic fuel tank skid is useless if you plan on putting any aftermarket triple set of skids all the way back to cover tranny and transfer case.

Comparing 16 / 17's wheels is useless if you're planning to copy every one else and put trd pro rims on.

Comparing automatic transmission to manual is useless cause every knows the manual is better cause no computer can satisfy your lust for gear control.

Once again to summarize these trucks are platforms for you to build up for your liking. Not some one else's opinion of what your truck should do.

Photo clearly shows they both get dirty just the same after running the same trails together all day. Neither got stuck, which sucks cause recovery stories are better to tell than remember that time no one broke or got stuck.

Well unless you change out the suspension on the Sport... to 5100s and new springs all around, get a Pro grill insert... now you have a Bro Pro.... Need I say more?

Sport ride stock is harsh.. once you try something different you will understand. I had to put a bail of hay in my bed until I changed to Bilstein shocks. Problem solved.

With 5100s you get the ride of a OR AND a Skewp.... another problem solved.

Sports rides stiff "for better road handling"...a lot of people complain they dont like the stiffness/harsher ride of the sport. It has Hitachi shocks.

TRD Off Road has bilstein shocks and is much more plush/supple ride. Better for off road and more comfortable on road in my opinion.

Test drive both, go over some speed bumps. You'll quickly see the difference. If you plan do do any offroading and don't want to spend a grand or two on upgraded off road suspension and diff locker, I highly recommend the TRD OR. I highly recommend the OR anyway because you get a locker and many other factory additions that the Sport does not have.

Bottom line the TRD Off Road is better bang for your buck because both are about the same cost. The Sport has cosmetic differences that some prefer (painted fenders and scoop hood) buy a TRD Off road and paint the fenders (few hundred bucks?), get a scooped hood (~$500) then be done.

SO what I'm hearing is, the differences are about the same as in the 2nd gen's? Other than the shock difference is there any difference in the gearing or in the springs?

No difference in gearing between trims. Difference is if you get a Man Trans vs Auto. Man trans has larger gears in rear.

I personally rarely use my crawl control and MTS when I go off roading in my TRD off road and actually wished I bought a TRD sport instead.

The aesthetics of the TRD sport are really nice and I actually want the fake hood scoop on my hood. My off road doesn't have the tech package so I have a chrome rear bumper instead of a painted one which all sports come with as the chrome bumper looks tacky in my opinion. I wonder if I can get a painted MGM OEM rear bumper for my off road if not I thinking about spray painting it black.

I understand why the sport is so popular because it's a lot easier on the eyes.

I got the Sport cause that was the only truck within 300 miles with an MT... upgraded suspension anyways so the Hitachi gear was only a small distraction. I upgraded to 5100 Bilsteins ... they have the same valving as the 4600s that come on the OR so now very similar ride but 3" taller than the OR stock. Only diff - no rear locker.

Not my first 4wd vehicle... not a big disadvantage not having a rear locker. I'd much prefer a front locker instead anyway. Don't see the advantage of the rear locker, tbh.
