Oil filter removal: what do you guys use?

    I usually use a band-type oil filter remover, but it sometimes crushes the canister. Is there something really easy that everybody uses that I don't know about?

    Me too. Have always used my hands to remove screw-on oil filters. If too oily, clean it up and use rubber gloves.

    You "should" be able to install/uninstall by hand. If you can't get it off by hand, it went on too tight.

    Sometimes I have to throw a strap wrench on it. Normally if I go a long time between changes. A few times I had to hammer a screw driver through the side and turn... :bananadead:

    Not sure why it was so tight then.

    I've never tightened one with anything but my hand in over 20 years of changing my oil.

    If you're crushing the old one taking it off you're probably putting it on a little to tight. Make sure to run some oil over the rubber gasket on the filter as well.
