So yesterday, we visited Carrizo Plain N.M. to check out the wildflowers (WOW!). late in the day, we took Simmler Rd across the valley to Elkhorn. Midway there was a stretch of 100 yards of mud in standing water, with a bypass around it, and a subaru imprezza or something stuck in the middle. I volunteered that I had a tow-strap so I positioned myself to where I could pull the car out, but let the cars owner, a 20-something asian girl, hook the strap up as I had no desire to get down on my hands and knees in the mud. huh, no tow hooks or tiedown loops under the car ends?? she dug out the owners manual, and looked up towing, and there is a 1" square plastic popout in each bumper, and a substantial eyebolt in the spare tire toolkit that you thread into the hole behind said popout?!? wow, never seen anything like that before, but I hooked my way oversized cheap tow strap to it, threaded it into the hole, and had no trouble pulling the subie onto dry land (I pulled from the SIDE of the mud, as I had no desire to get stuck myself). 4L + 1st gear, and I could hardly tell the car was hooked to me :)

anyways, I've never seen that sort of tow arrangement, is that something thats common just to Subarus, or is it a feature of other newer cars? All my euro cars have had tow loops under the front and rear bumpers.

Both of my import cars had that setup, at least in the rear.

most cars have them. they are used to tie the vehicles down during shipping (to the deck inside the Ro-Ro carriers). once landed one is sored for towing and if the vehicle has more than one the rest are thrown away

ah. as I said, I've had a bunch of mostly European cars, VWs, Volvos, and Mercedes, from the 60s-90s. These all had 4 tiedown hard points under/behind the bumpers, which are suitable for emergency towing. We did have a 2004 Camry, but I sure don't remember any such eyebolt, but then, I never even had to change a flat on that, just oil changes.

It's a newer car thing. Most people can't figure out towing one way or the other anyway. That girl was already smarter than the average person...actually resorted to the manual instead of crying helplessly.

    K&N - suckering people since 1969.

If I'm buying a used car, and I see a K&N sticker, or air filter, I walk away.
