Dealership sheered a lug, should I have asked for a loaner until replacement?

BMW Motorrad had a recall on aluminum wheel flanges. Over torquing the rear wheel lug nuts had caused cracks in some wheel flanges. For the most part, most of the flanges don't show any visible cracks. There were a handful that did-all of which came from the same fleet service group. There was another instance we could not remove a rear wheel because three of bolts had been driven in with air-those were drilled out and fortunately, the customer's bike was a part of the wheel flange recall or it would have cost him several hundred in parts and labor. That vehicle had been serviced by someone who didn't use a torque wrench.

Breaking the wheel stud might not even have been that dealer's fault. Regardless, torque specs and tightening order exist for a reason and it's probably a good idea to follow them especially if they involve angles ;)

    Whole bunch of shit! $$$
Not a good idea for aluminum wheels, but ok if you like warped rotors.

Even worse IMO. Just buy a second set of sensors used on Ebay. Have them put in and take to discount tire each year or get techstream and program youself. Much cheaper than paying to swap sensors 2x a yr.

Alright.... further issue. Pulling away from the house just now, I got a huge grinding sound. I immediately stopped and backed back to the house and could hear something clanking around in the front left suspension. I can't see anything visibly that could cause the issue, but is it possible that the back of the broken stud is stuck between the disk breaks and the dust cover in the back and is rotating and getting bound on the break pad assembly?

Pulled the wheel off to get a better look and found the back of the stud lodged between the rotor and dust cover. I can't get it out without removing the calipers and rotors, which I'm not inclined to do for the first time tonight.

Looking through what few vents there are in the break dust cover, it looks like the damn thing is grinding on about everything back there. When I drop it off at the dearlership in the morning (and get a loaner so I can get to work) what should I have them look at and or replace? Looks like the back of all the studs have been damaged, there is a wear pattern on the back side of the hub from it grinding, I'm assuming there will be damage to my break pads and/or the assembly that holds them...

Also, do I drive it tomorrow to get it to them, knowing it will do further damage...

You can't just demand a loaner. Dealerships are not obligated to provide one..

With the further damage that's occurred to my vehicle from their mistake, they can either provide a loaner, or provide me with a cab to and from work for this trip.
They may not be legally obligated to do so, but if their level of customer service allows me to have a vehicle that's not safe to drive (stud is now loose behind the hub and grinding the remaining studs, the hub, and god knows what else, all while sounding like a fork in a garbage disposal) without placing me in a loaner.... they will have one giant, noisy thorn in their side for a very long time.

I'm surprised a dealer would let it go.
Even though you're likely fine imagine the lawsuits if something went wrong?
Wouldn't think a dealer would take that sort of risk.

    this.

When I had to get my fender re-painted under warranty they had the truck for 2 days. No loaner or anything.

The most they offered was when I dropped it off they could have the customer shuttle drive me wherever I had to go.

Arguably a warranty issue (Toyota corporate responsibility) is different than a dealershop breaking something on your car. A call to corporate can do wonders.

It's not even that the stud is missing anymore.... it's that the stud is stuck behind the rotor grinding against everything, causing damage. There is no way anyone would consider it safe to drive like that. The only reason the stud is back there is because they neglected to remove it when they broke it. Driving with a removed stud concerned me a little, hence the thread. But, this is another situation entirely... and entirely a result of the dealerships service department.

    Agreed but still.
No obligation for them to do so.

In this case given the safety concern it could cause, I'm surprised they wouldn't
Just go to the news dude haha.

A local honda dealer here is set to close soon.
About a year ago they dropped someone's car off a lift somehow, to the point it was written off but Honda didn't want to do anything to help. Wouldn't offer a discount on a new vehicle or used one on lot etc. Just basically told the guy get the insurance money and buy a new vehicle. He went to the local news network and it was on there etc. Since then the dealer has been going down as they don't get as much business haha.

Dude your dealer sucks......this is one of the most incompetent and careless thing I've heard of. They sheared the lug off and left the broken piece in the hub? Unreal.....that is absolutely retarded.

    Now I'd be pissed.

Both of those are risks that both of you have accepted. They accept the cost/risk of not providing a loaner and you accept the risk of driving your truck.

Local Subaru dealer used to provide loaners that my wife used when her car was worked on. They no longer offer them. It's all about the bottom line. Customer service is nothing more than a smile behind the counter.

I hope you get a loaner and I hope it works out but your post screams entitlement

I accepted the risk of an unsafe vehicle simply by driving a vehicle? By that logic, why are there recalls? Doesn't matter if it kills you, you accepted the risk by driving it.... o_O

Yup. I've never turned a vehicle in for a recall. Ever. My choice. My risk.

I would be concerned about every stud on truck that was tightened. If studs have been stretched from over torqueing they are weak.

Your situation has changed, you may consider calling toyota roadside to pick that truck up and take it to the dealership. Or call the dealership in the morning and tell them what is going on, they may tell you to drive it in anyways, or get it hauled in. I hope this gets fixed up soon for you.
