it's a difference... and pointless that toyota couldn't put the mts/crawl stuff somewhere else. as a glasses wearer, i like to have somewhere to put my regular glasses and my rx sunglasses. if something happened and i ever traded my sr5 and got an offroad, i'd look at doing a mod to move those controls and putting an oem sunglasses holder in. crawl/mts is 2 buttons and a knob. there's no need for the knob to be that big and remove something useful.

It's Toyota's fault, not yours. You may have not even known it was only 2wd when you bought it.

I dunno...... It's about the equivalent of seeing dual exhaust on a V6 Mustang....

I knew it was 4x2 wen I bought it. 4x4 was an extra $5k where I live. And I don't do any heavy OR but wanted the aggressive look and the locker. I would love to have a 4x4, but I really won't ever use it to justify the added cost.

All this "better" is subjective, not everyone bought their truck to go off road. In fact I'm sure majority buys it either to bro stance(talk about gadgets it has but never used) and or actually need to one for daily duties. I bought one because I own a home, given that I do all my work(whatever it maybe) I need a reliable and somewhat economical hauler.
As far as people that bought it to "exclusively" off-road, im guessing they'll upgrade oe parts to stuff that actually works, because oe equipment either overheats, explodes or makes a ton of noise
As it pertains to skewp, I'd ask most all of the OR dudes in hood swap thread why they want one

Is it me or does the OR brake pedal feel stiff?

I have a new OME suspension at home with the 90000 shocks because I felt my sport suspension sat too low and was too soft for me and if you are one of those sensitive people out there that needs to have that smooth SUV soccer mom ride then you are better off getting the OR. My wife drives my truck quite a bit so I got the auto for her and she is only 5'4". She has never complained about the truck being too stiff or the scoop on my truck being too tall so I am assuming if you are having an issue with the sport scoop being too tall or the suspension being too stiff you are one of those OR owners that are overly sensitive about everything in life and need something to complain about. ANY of the Tacoma models with 4x4 EVEN the base model will be more than adequate off-road and can be built to handle just about anything. Like others have said just go and test drive a few different models and see what YOU like and get the one that makes YOU happy. just my $.02

Plastic can be reconditioned to look like new easier than paint. I remember reconditioning old Jeep fenders and was super easy and they looked great.

The Sport has the hood scoop and I'm not a fan of black fender flairs. Also I know for a fact that none of the off road options on the OR would ever get used by me.

The vast majority of my decision however was purely logistics. I wanted an AC, the dealer only had manual Sport ACs.

I thought the concept of placing the off road controls over your head was a little unique... silly, but I could go for it. However, in my Sport the 4wd swith is on the dash while the traction control swith is up over my head all by it's lonesome...

Kinda a crackhead place for it.
