noticed a problem

I was doing some work on my truck this morning, and noticed on the passenger side that there was a large amount of grease coming from a hole in my CV joint boot. I'm not the best at turning wrenches so I'm wondering how serious of a problem that could be. The dealership said they wouldn't be able to look at it for more than a week so do you think it would be safe to drive until I can get it taken care of?

 

if its from the cv, its the cv boot, if its closer to the differential its an axle seal

 

This happened on my old toyota and it didnt last very long untill it started clunking and almost fell apart, but i took it out in the sand dunes and mud and everything else while the boot was torn. Dont do that haha. I think you should be fine getting back and forth to and from work or whatever for a week. Just try and keep it clean and keep dirt or sand out of it. You could even go as far as wrapping tape or something around it. hope this helps.

pump it full of grease before you tape it.

 

haha I didn't even think about putting tape on it, I think that should work until I can take it in. Thanks for the help guys.

 

Well I thought it would be alright for a couple days but guess I was wrong, the truck started shaking and making a loud banging noise. Just got it towed back to my house. I guess tomorrow I'll get a buddy to take it to the dealership on a trailer =\

 

Yeah that sucks. Seems like it should've lasted longer than that, though.

 

heres my thoughts-
--that dealership sucks ass! a dealership should say "when would you like to bring it in?". its warranty so its not like they aren't gonna get paid. what do they tell people that don't make appointments and just show up? tell em they can't change the oil for another week?
-- if they tell you to wait a week then thats all the more damage they have to replace in a week.

i guess now they have to look at it sooner than they wanted.
i would have found another dealer. i bypass 2 dealers to get to a service dept that has good people.

 

I called them this morning, they said they wont even be able to work on it until next friday, and they can't even look at it to verify the repairs today so I can't get a rental vehicle under the warranty.....

 

It's not gonna be covered under warranty. With a lift and oversized tires you can forget about having CVs, especially the boots, covered. That's probably THE component to fail when you lift our trucks. I got an axle seal replaced but that's only because I'm running factory wheels and coilovers set at almost no lift.

 

If that's the case man, I'm really going to fuck up that dealership because they told me I could put my lift on it with out voiding the warranty. They even directed me to the shop (which the dealer owns) to get it put on. The tires aren't really that over sized though I'm only running 265's.

 

If that's what they told you then good luck. My boss 265s on a revtek spacer lift that was dealer installed and never has issues with service but she babies her truck and nothing ever breaks.

 

That's what her husbands jeep is for.
