In my opinion, someone could get a brand new OR or other trim for that price so you probably don't have a large market you are selling to. You're looking for someone who is oblivious to pricing or someone who specifically wants a limited.

The used market prices are actually what drove me to just buy new.

Here, when you buy a used vehicle, you still pay a sales tax when you get your license plate. It's based on the value of the car and not necessarily asking price. If I use your numbers, the difference in tax is about $606. Not a big amount when talking $36,000-$42,000.

Do you not pay sales tax on used?

Why does Truecar think you're a "Certified Dealer"? Are you?

I think it's generally accepted that private sales are different from dealer sales, and while you seem like you should be hitting a 'private sale' pricepoint, you seem to be at a 'dealer' pricepoint.

Two years ago (Feb. 2015) in Seattle I sold my 2007 SR5 4WD DC LB with JBL, 115K miles, and cheap aluminum canopy (worth maybe $300 by itself) for KBB dealer price. Put my ad on local Craigslist on a Saturday afternoon and had my first offer Saturday evening. Transaction finalized on Sunday for $16,400. Had multiple, earnest-sounding inquiries all weekend, from as far away as Portland and Spokane, before I pulled the ad on Sunday. And still received many more inquiries into the following week.

OK -- I realize that my situation was far different from the OP's. But perhaps it illustrates the market difference when selling an 8 year old Tacoma for $16K versus a 1 year old for $36. Just very different markets at that price point. Market becomes much more inelastic at the top end (Econ 101).

In Washington, you pay sales tax on the amount that is on the bill of sale. One common way that people pay less in sales tax is to have a bill of sale that is less than what is actually paid (there is a form to sign if it's way too far outside book value). Regardless, it's still a $6,6000 difference between a used 2016 and a new 2016/2017.

I'm trying out this company called "Tred". They post on all the different sites including Craigslist. I'm at the private sale price point. Like I said before, there isn't a single Limited within 800 miles, at a dealer or private, that is cheaper than mine.

All of that is moot since I'm asking about the sales market in general. But this thread has gotten way off topic from what I really meant to ask.

$33,998-$37,998 is the range at Carmax with their no haggle price for 2016 limiteds with 3k to 17k miles.

Supposedly Carmax will buy cars even if you don't buy one of theirs. Might be worth just seeing what they would give you for yours for a quick flip of last resort.

In Nevada you don't pay tax on vehicles if you purchase private party. If you bought at a dealer out of state then you would get hit with taxes when you go to register it. Also I think OP's trucks is reasonably priced for the area. When I was looking for a truck everyone in town was asking about 33k or more for a 12-15 TRDOR with 30,000 miles or so on it. I ended up travelling quite a ways to get a good deal on one with about 14,000 miles.

Since you were looking at a new truck, it might not hurt to just inquire with them on what kind of trade value they might give you.

Yep, I might check them out. The closest one is in Beaverton, about 130 miles away from me.

I know people that always buy from Carmax and nowhere else. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

I think they've created a unique market that has a loyal customer base.

Check the price at KBB . They also have a feature for get an instant cash offer. I did it and got several calls from dealers , all for close to the KBB price .

There are other factors that would sway me to buy new vs used.

In that price range, I could get a new Tacoma with a lower trim package. Yours for being 1 year old has higher mileage: 27k miles, only 9k left on the warranty (~ 1 year for 10k average driver). No remaining maintenance, but its only 2 oil changes anyway (since you're above 25k miles).

If I couldn't settle on a lower trim and had to have a limited, that would probably be the personality type that would rather have a fresh "new" vehicle anyway.

I am happy with my 16 and have no plans to sell it but, I would not buy it used . I would get a new one. edit . unless it was 30K or less.

I wouldnt buy the OPs used vehicle for 2 reasons:

    (1) Miles IMHO are too high. Pampered, garaged or whatever, it is barely a 1 year old truck with almost 30K mi. Nope, not touching it because ...
    (2) Price. It may be the best price around, and a fair price no doubt, but its a large chunk of cash and a decent-sized loan that I have to pay about a 1% higher apr. If I am going to be stuck with a used vehicle for that price, I would buy a low mileage used. Which would put me around the 5K mi. I would also want to make sure the car/truck is everything I wanted because I am not picking up a $2,000 craigslist special where I'm happy it runs with AC. There is almost no recourse outside of selling it and taking a hit if I don't like it (same issue at dealer but at least I may have more selection). That said...
    (3) It isn't exactly the one I wanted, which would be the offroad manual, though for any particular buyer, they have different requirements and/or wants.

guess it all boils down to, If you want to sell it, you will drop the price until it sells, If your wife is forcing you to sell it and you don't want to, then keep the price like it is.

What can you get that model for at the dealer? How much lower would you want the price to be if your were buying it used?

it's sometimes about where you're advertising as well. in So Cal autotrader never worked for me. I've gotten 1 sale out of 5 from it. Now Craigslist is where I bought and sold most of my cars. You'll get a lot of lowballers, scams and just plain idiots but it works.

I'd get your truck appraised by Carmax or some dealer that buys cars only to get a local baseline on market value in your area.

Most potential buyers are cheap and always looking for a deal. The bad thing against you is if they buy a Toyota Certified Preowned they get a longer warranty vs new.

I paid 34,600$ for a new 2017 TRD OR 6 months ago, nobody in their right mind would touch this used at 36K.
