Hid headlight bulbs

which one would you guys recommend, had on my old Tacoma but ended up taking it out due to condensation in the headlights.

 

For the projector headlights of the newer Tacomas, reputable LEDs will be better than HIDs, with high output halogens still beating the rest.

Its really personal preference, some people like HID's, others go with LED. I've run these HID kits for years in multiple vehicles and never had an issue. But if you go HID, stick with the 35 Watt (not the 55 Watt). Huge difference over the factory headlights, but the LED in the fog's seem to scatter more than the halogen.

Even the best aftermarket LED is not capable of matching the output and throw of HID.

Factory designed solutions are getting really good, if not better...but a retrofit bulb in a projector housing isn't going to beat HID.

And suggesting high output halogens better than either is just delusional.

 

Okay, you are one of those guys. You are flat out wrong, period. There isn't only brightness to consider.

LED bulbs better approximate the position of the filament than HID bulbs. Therefore, the beam pattern will be closer to that of the halogen bulbs. However, it still won't match, and HIDs are even worse in that they can cause glare in a projector housing.

If you are talking about a full on HID projector retrofit, that is a different story. However, OP only asked about bulbs.

The housing and reflector is not designed for HID or LED so they light is best focused using halogen bulbs. In my experience, HID has better distance projection than LED but some people do not like the "warm up" period of HID's. There is NO halogen plug in (H11) bulb that is brighter than a H11 HID. I'm still waiting to see what happens on a LED bulb when the cooling fan fails and the housing overheats. If it melts the housing and you lose seal, that's an expensive replacement! I just replaced my headlight housing (unrelated incident) and it was almost $800 for 1 side.
Hard to be the time tested HID's IMO. If you want LED add a light bar.

Have you looked at the HID install? the glare is so minimal its almost not even relevant. And do you have a link to those brighter than HID halogens?

I should say that I have projectors in mine so that's what I'm using for my examples. If you have non-projectors then this is a totally different story. HID/LED is a bad idea in non-projectors, there's plenty of good upgraded halogens for that kind of set up.

OP ignore the trolls and get whatever YOU like. Should start a poll to see how many are running each one, I've seen a number of people selling their LED's lately but not sure why.

 

If you live near Orange Country CA or San Diego, I would recommend DDM tuning since they're local. I've been purchasing their kits for the last 8 years. They offer a life time warranty, but their QC is a hit or a miss. I had 1 55w slim hid kit that runs perfectly fine and still works today after switching from 2 cars and a bike since 2010 and 2 other kits that I had to warranty bulbs and 1 ballast.

On the other hand Morimoto's are the gold standard for premium HiD kits and projectors. I might be going that route on the Tacoma though.

Yep. Brother's HIDs in halogen projectors glare (not as bad as reflectors would) and have poor beam distribution. Morimoto Mini H1s and FX-Rs in my cars have much better light distribution and no glare.

Do what you want, as long as you don't compromise the safety of others. The moment you start affecting other people is the moment your personal opinion becomes irrelevant. Headlight bulbs is one of the important systems that can and do affect other people.

Lol da fuq does that link have anything to do with this thread? You do realize 3rd gens have projectors not reflectors like the 2nd gens, right? Everyone knows nothing belongs in a reflector housing except dim halogens but once you step into projector territory there is a clear winner when it comes to light output: HIDs.

have you seen the results of HIDs in 3rd gen projectors? Cutoff is crisp and glare is non-existent. Regardless, HIDs still throw more light than any LED or Halogen drop in solution on the market, for now. Is what it is.

 

Again, cutoff and glare are not the only things to consider.
