I'm currently overseas and all we have for trucks are Hilux's. I'd take a hilux any day over a tacoma as long as it has the same engine here. These things are great. Some of those pictures don't do it justice. I've seen some mean Hilux's. The roads here are complete trash too. In the states people would consider these roads as off-roading, not just because they're all dirt, but they are completely washed out and require 4x4. These things keep on trucking without an issue. With 60k+ on the odometer and never leaving 4th gear (90% of that is in 2nd-3rd gear), these things have proved themselves. Not just to me, but all the local populace. Haven't seen a single domestic truck other than a Hilux or the Land cruiser truck.

I think the 2012-2015 tacomas look the best, but I'd sacrifice some glamor for the durability and dependability of the Hilux.

60k is proving itself? Some vehicles are still under warranty at 60k....

I would rethink that. The Hilux now are too Europe styled. Too small. An earlier Hilux sure. But the new ones are more ridgeline like but smaller. Engine is badass but everything else is cramped.

Yea, and considering none of these vehicles have a straight body panel, have been abused off road, haven't been taking to a dealer for any sort of recall/TSB/etc, and haven't had a single part break, I'd say 60k of that abuse is proving itself. The engine is almost a guarantee to last that long without worries, but there is about 90% more of a truck than the engine to have issues when abused. I'm sure a Tacoma's engine would stand the test, but not 100% sure the rest would live up to the test without issue.

The only thing that will get me out of my 2017 is diesel. I would much prefer it to be a diesel Tacoma, but wouldn't hesitate to buy a Hilux if that's how Toyota decided to bring it to market.

As much as they have said it's never going to happen though.... I doubt they do it for quite a while. The only thing possibly able to change that is the neutering of the EPA standards with the new administration.

It does look a bit to similar to the ridgeline, but at least it still has a solid rear axle (so it can still be considered a truck - unlike the ridgeline in my opinion). I'd prefer it over the 3rd gen taco for the turbo-diesel engine. Additionally, the 4x4's models all come with a locking read differential.

Granted, the white truck in the 3rd pic isn't bad...not really a Hilux, it looks like...and I've not seen a TRD marked Hilux either, but that doesn't really mean anything...

I travel overseas and see them all the time. Hilux trucks are not as truck looking as the Tacoma. They are the minimum that Honda should make the Ridgeline look like if they want to call their vehicle a truck.

There would be a market for the Hilux in the US, but by the time you add air bags, crumple zones, safety sense, backup camera, emissions compliance, it would be closer to the 3rd gen.
So basically, a Tacoma with a diesel engine would be the best option in the US and Canada.

Your "source" clearly says in the title 'Hilux'. Your original post said the Tacoma is being replaced with a gen 4 Tacoma. Not a USA Gen 1 'Hilux'. Two different trucks.

Common, this was a troll post. Mods > Delete.
