One more axle question

This may be a tough one to answer and for me to explain but when i was changing out me rear axle seals I noticed an inspection plate on both sides it was probably 1/2" wide and was almost right over where that bearing and seal ride. Im just wondering if this is to check the bearing or maybe so you can grease your bearing??


Any ideas?

 

I would assume it is to inspect the pinion for broken teeth and such. The bearing is oil lubed along with everything else in the diff, so definately not for grease.

 

I dont think its to inspect the pinion because it is on the end of the axle by the brake not by the diff. housing. Plus i just remember the bearing is sealed so you dont have to grease it duh lol But it very well could be to check for steel peices in your axle.

Ill try to get a picture of it but its out by the wheel on the top of the axle?

 

Whoops, my bad. Guess I should have read a little closer. Pics would be great. I'm not sure what they would be for then. There is really nothing at the ends to inspect, except for maybe to check for pitting in the bearing rollers. Anything more serious than that, you would want to completely remove them to take a look. Pretty much all of the metal shavings/chunks would end up settling in the bottom of the pumpkin.

 

Ya idk i saw it and it got me wondering wtf it would be for so i thought id ask lol ill get some pics of it and hopefully we can get this figured out
