Resale value only matters when you sell.

I don't buy vehicles with the idea I'm going to sell them.

Plus I heavily mod vehicles, which means resale value will always be astronomically below what I put in lol.

Plus I'm not going to buy a vehicle I'm not happh with just because one day I can sell it for a good price. Makes no sense.

My 2010 with 87k miles has had the following work done since I bought it new:

    - Rear leaf springs replaced twice under warranty (TSB springs in 2010 and recall springs in 2016).
    - Gas pedal TSB at 13k miles under warranty.
    - Manual transmission pilot bearing replaced under warranty at 57k miles due to chirping noise TSB.
    - Clutch replaced at 58k miles due to failed clutch disc spring; split the cost with dealer.
    - Driver's side A/F sensor replaced at 79k miles in 2016; did the work myself.
    - Interior water leak from HVAC unit at 75k miles; fixed with putty because I didn't want to spend $1000+ on replacement.

I've been experiencing the chirping noise from the blower motor for a few years now and I just live with it. I'm going to take it apart and grease the motor when the weather warms up.

On the bright side, my front brakes are finally shot at 87k miles. I've had the replacement rotors and pads for months but I need to get the damn slide pins removed from the calipers.

Probably fewer repairs than the average vehicle but more than I would expect from a Toyota, let alone a Tacoma.

05 tacoma prerunner 311,000 miles. Oil changes, spark plugs, battery 3 times, belts 1 time, rotors 2 times. Usual stuff. Other than that, not a single issue.

I don't regret purchasing it but I feel like all I do is bitch about it. I wish Toyota would have done some things differently so that everyone's faith in them would've been more warranted. If you look you can already see posters who have post-purchase rationalization and attack anyone who has the gall to mention their problems with "you should just go buy a prius/raptor/ridgeline" or "it's a truck not a car".

Well. Here are my complaints over 4 years:

    • MPG (partly my driving style, but still should be better).
    • Seating position too high (did the rear-view mirror mod, dealt with it)
    • Blower motor buzzing and grinding (replaced with TSB version)
    • Vibrations at 45mph (replaced needle bearing with the ECGS version)
    • Vibrations at >60mph (replaced the carrier bearing)
    • Water intrusion (finally fixed after re-sealing back window/3rd brakelight)
    • Timing chain cover oil leak TSB (over $1k, will have to be done again some years later)
    • Vibrations at >60mph (replaced U-Joints)
    • Master Brake light (intermittent problem... no other symptoms)
    • Vibrations at >60mph (broken rear flange yoke, drive shaft literally fell off)
    • Vibrations (repaired/re-balanced driveshaft and replaced carrier bearing again)

Seems like people with the same year and model taco have similar issues. I've been looking to upgrade to a newer model. But this thread has me thinking.

Between 2010 to current, which year taco has had the least amount of issues?

Maybe that question should be it's own thread? :notsure:

I kind of regret getting the 3rd gen, the FR-S it replace was a much better vehicle, but not the 2nd Gen.

I agree, I was speaking to the fellow who posted this:

We keep our vehicles 'til the wheels fall off, and then put them back on and drive some more. My wife holds the record with an '89 Celica we bought new and drove for 425k miles, it still looked pretty good and ran fine when sold in 2003...

140,000km in a short 3 years, done all my own maintenance minus the transmission flush because I did not have the machinery. Not one issue.

^ This. I don't understand the whole resale value thing when buying a vehicle. I know a lot of people don't keep their vehicles that long, but for me resale value had 0 effect when getting my Tacoma. Reliability had everything to do with it

That is why Toyotas in general, and Tacomas in particular, have high residual value--wanna' see depreciation look at Chrysler products.

We bought my wife's '03 Highlander in late 2006 with 85k miles, it just turned 215k (with regular fluid changes, timing belt, plugs, etc.) and runs like new--I'd leave in 5 minutes drive it anywhere...

I wish it was my friend! I caught it taxiing at an "undisclosed location" and I'm a huge fan of aircraft, particularly WWII aircraft. I couldn't resist taking a few pics, pilot even waved at me from an open cockpit window.

Very cool... I've only seen one in a Museum, and with only less then 50 still Airworthy I bet that was killer to see in person. I work on modern aircraft's for a living (with no pilots) but would trade it in a heartbeat to turn wrenches on a P51 or P40.:plane::oldglory:
