Hello im a woman with a mission.
I bought a 1998 Tacoma extended cab 4 cylinder a couple years ago to start a business. Last week I bought a small 1958 vintage trailer. Now I am told I can't pull it with my truck? Is this true? Help!

Welcome to TW! We're glad you mentioned that you're single, as that's very important to this thread ;) Anyways, it all depends on the weight of the trailer. The only way to know for sure is to get it on a scale, or maybe there's an old manual or label on it stating it's weight.

From what I can dig up online max tow capacity is 3,500 lbs for your truck.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

We can't tell with the info you've offered.

Who told you? And what was their reasoning? I'm sure you were smart enough to ask 'why do you say that' and not just accept it as gospel.

Do you have the 2.4l or the 2.7l? Both are 4cyl. I wouldn't try it with the 2.4l, but if you have the 2.7l, you could pull it as long as you don't load it up too heavily. You might also struggle going uphill.

the 4 bangers really don't like to pull, they will but plan on stopping at every gas station. Do you have the owners manual with your truck? Or are there labels still in your door jams, somewhere you will find out what the truck is rated to tow.

Yes I do have the owners manual! Someone else told me have to put a new hitch on under the number so it won't pull the bumper off? I want to get what I need in just want to make sure that I'm not just getting sold! That's the reason my original post said single woman. I'm looking for solid information so I don't get taken advantage of

For your hitch, is it just a ball on a bumper like this
    [IMG]

Or is an actual hitch like this.

Yeah. The top kind isn't able to tow much of anything. Look online for a hitch that will fit your truck. They're very easy to install if you're wanting to try it yourself. Should just be a few bolts that hold it in. Then you'll be able to tow your trailer, depending on the weight of it.

Clearwater Bill I'm smart enough to go to the Tacoma site and ask for more information. Every person I've talked to has a different answer. For some reason people want to give negatives? So y'all are so awesome and so helpful!

Your gonna want a class III hitch I believe. Do you know what your engine size is? The 2.4 or the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder? Another thing to consider is the transmission. Is it auto or manual?
