I like the GM twins. Although I'm very surprised that neither has push button start or even a sunroof.

 

The biggest thing the GM twins are missing is a reason for me to buy one.

Sadly when I was at the Calgary auto show they confirmed that the largest tires you can fit under this truck without cutting up the truck and changing the UCA's is a 32. It's even worse than the Tacoma if you are trying to mod it since the position of the cab and cab mounts mean you'll have to tub it like a Tacoma would have to tub for 35's.

I'm not saying it's not a great deal though. If you want to run 32's, or possibly 255 33's (I tried to press them on that but they had no clue on that, just on same width tires when I asked why they don't install 33's stock), then you can get this sucker in the base model version of the trim for 50K OTD. That's only a couple of K more than a TRD OR here and it does have lockers front and rear which is sweet.

 

And DIESEL!!!!!!!

No Diesel on the base model ZR2. You have to order it as an option. It adds 4K IIRC. A fully loaded Diesel ZR2 up here will cost as much as a TRD Pro.

 

The ZR2 essentially targeting the same market as the PRO so that makes sense. Plus for a turbo Diesel i'd easily have dropped an extra 3 or 4 grand on my Tacoma.

Seriously though the Diesel isn't great for short trips. I have a friend that has one and he's already having problems with the emissions system after 10K from mostly in town driving. I'd go with the gas option and base model, then mod the shit out of it.

The next generation V6 and 8 speed auto in the 2017 Colorado gives 0-60 times that are tantalizingly close to a stock Ecoboost F150 (6.1-6.2 vs 5.5-5.8) and is quicker than the Ridgeline

The four-wheel-drive example we tested recorded a 6.1-second sprint to 60 mph, a full second quicker than a similarly equipped 2015 Colorado and 0.5 second ahead of the all-wheel-drive Ridgeline. Its quarter-mile time improved, too, requiring only 14.8 seconds to cross the line at 95 mph, gains of 0.7 second and 4 mph and again shading the Ridgeline’s 15.2-second run. The Toyota Tacoma with a V-6 and four-wheel drive trails these two by a wide margin, needing 7.9 seconds to get to 60 mph and 16.1 for the quarter-mile.

The ZR2 comes out this month. I will definitely be perusing it.

 

Someone brought this thread back but I cant help but comment on how the Tacomas old and archaic drum brakes stopped shorter than the Colorados disc brakes..Perhaps I should rephrase this to Tacomas Venerable drum brakes.

 

ZR2 will be on my short list as will the Ranger in 2 to 3 years. I'll probably dump my turd gen and move into one of those two depending 1. on the styling of the new ranger and 2. how the reviews shake out.

 

Not sure why 0-60 times matter. As long as the truck isn't posting above 8's it really isn't a big deal. The ZR2 isn't a race truck lol.

 

I occasionally have to drive in Atlanta, and 0-60 times, actually moreso the ability to get out of the way, can sometimes become a matter of extreme importance.

Actually the 2017 Colorado stops 2 feet shorter from 70 than the Tacoma, 183ft vs 185ft (Limited stopped in 185. OR took 192 due to gnarly tires)

 

+1 for new diesel being terrible.

Had a new diesel truck mess up on me on the way to New mexico because it had "low DEF". Checked the reservoir, completely full of DEF. The truck stayed in limp mode for the rest of the drive there, then once we got to our destination wouldn't even go over 5MPH. Diesel engines aren't supposed to be complicated like that. The golden days of the Benz Diesels, 12/24V cummins, and 7.3 powerstrokes are gone. We are just getting over complicated crap.

So that being said, ill pass on the twins. I hesitated buying my Tacoma when I heard it was Atkinson cycle. The extra main and rod bearings would increase the chances of something going wrong. Once I heard that it wasn't a TRUE atkinsons I pulled the trigger.

 

So one bad experience = all diesels are bad. Hmmmm that checks out
