Hi. Ive got a 2010 TRD sport with 4.0 auto. 67k miles. Bought as a worktruck and i planned on driving it 150k plus miles. bought it 3 weeks ago. Have a 90 day warranty through dealership. Engine makes tons of valvetrain noise. Sounds lile a tractor. Runs fine but feels sluggish sometimes.

Ive read all aboit "tacoma tick" and the valve on the drivers side intake. Ive checked the valve. Its not making all this racket. I read synthetic oil could help and i wanted to try an oem filter so i just changed the oil to valvoline 5-30 synthetic with oem filter. Most ive EVER spent on an oil change and thats with doing it myself.. it didnt help the noise one bit.

I ran it by Toyota and they tried to act lile its normal and let me listen to another older 4.0 Tacoma with double the mileage saying "this makes noise too" but it was half as loud and more of a tolerable faster engine sound with more of a tick and not my slow clacking obvioisly coming from the top valve covers.

Basicly Toyota may just be giving me their auto repeat response to this issue. After all deniability keeps them from having to replace alot of engines. The dealership(Ford) will buy it back but ill lose 1000 dollars becaise they are making me liable for taxes and other fees. Sucks. https://youtu.be/4A6pVNLSenA

That sounds like a damn diesel truck. My 2010 isn't nearly that loud and I have 130k miles on it.

In withholding commenting. You are moving the camera around too much and the camera does not show what you are recording because it is too dark.

Please provide a longer clip during the day light. We would love it if you could do a recording from in the cab with the doors closed.

    Subbed.

sounds like open headers. I would be looking for an exhaust leak. other that the engine doesn't sound all that bad. from the video. maybe a valve adjustment would help it some

Yes video is dark. At first im under the truck by the catalytic converters. Then i go to the drivers side by valve cover then passenger side by valve cover. Either way. Sounds like shit. And i dont think this is normal or tolerable. And unless both manifold gaskets are gone its def not an exhaust leak that happens to be emitting sound from both valvecovers. Oh and btw this is a clean truck with 67k miles that i just paid 22k for. I didnt hear this noise at all when i bought it. I think the engine was doped with some lucas or similar before trade in.

I'd take it back to the dealer and take advantage of your warranty. they have to follow through with your complaints or end up in court I would think

I agree. All engines are noisy to a degree if you get close up and personal with them, and as has been stated more than once on this forum and elsewhere it appears minimising engine noise was not a high priority design criteria for the 4.0 Tacoma. I have read the 1GR-FE engine was designed exclusively for use in Toyota's pickups so that minimal noise was not a primary goal does not surprise or concern me.

Can you get a second/maybe third opinion? I'm pretty sure that my '09 V6 (139k miles) would sound similar were I too get intimate with it in a less than favourable acoustic environment.

That thing sounds hurt. Idle also seems really high. I've never heard of the 4.0 having traditional valve issues with 70k on it. Hopefully it's just an exhaust issue, but those valves sound like they slapping pretty hard. Either way, take it back and press the issue.

Really the truck runs out great despite the noise. I went today to potentially trade the 2010 sport 2x4 on a 2012 trd offroad 4x4. It was really nice with leather, dif lock, downhill assist, jbl stereo etc. But oddly ebough the engine in it sounded the same and maybe louder than the 2010. Also listened to someone elses 2012 with same motor. Sounded about the same. Maybe a little less loud.

I really wanted the 2012 trd. It was super sweet but it had some leakage feom the trans or transfer case and seemed to run real sluggish ajd had a stiff pedal feel. It had 96k miles in great cosmetic shape and no rust. I was gonna get it because it eas an upgrade but they tried to charge me a few grand more. I said "sure if you tune it up ajd fix the leak. Ofcourse they didnt agree to do that. So i walked away. The 2010 seems to run fine. Im tired of dealing with the dealership and even though they agreed to "fix it" it would be on their terms and their digression. I want to choose whats done, who does it and when. So screw it. If i have to fix it i will.

Honestly I don't think it sounds too much noisier than the 2 tacomas Ive had/have. They both had noisy motors.
