Best battery (amperage)

Hi, i recently bought a costco battery (625amps), my old battery was a 725 amps and no problem but with this change it started to idle strange , hesitating to run at the beginning, before it was around 900rpm when steady, but now os around 500, could it be the battery?

 

It could be the computer relearning after swapping the batteries out.

 

When will it be stable? Does it take too much time?

 

The "amps" you are referring to are the CCA (Cold Cranking Amperes) ratings--it's the number of amperes a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds, while maintaining an output voltage of at least 7.2 volts. I.e. it is unrelated to everyday operation of the vehicle.

The ECU does have to relearn some operating parameters (idle speed control being one) after swapping out the battery, however it should settle down in 15 to 20 miles of normal traffic (not highway) driving...

FWIW -- A 625 CCA battery is a bit "small" for the Tacoma, the OEM unit being 700 to 725 CCA. Walmart's Maxx 24F is rated at 750 CCA and is only $94 with a 5 year (3+2) warranty--just bought one to replace the 5-year-old battery (also a WM Maxx) in my '09, that's how I know...

 

I had meant to mention that it is possible you got a bad battery--have it tested at one of the FLAPS...

 

Costco once sold batteries branded as Kirkland. Those are no longer available, at least not in my area.
They now sell batteries branded with their name and they are nothing short of trash.
I've taken back more than I care to remember in the past year.
They are the cheapest price-wise that I've found and I now know why.

 

Dude, what does your manual (or Toyota website) say about what type of battery amperage is recommended for your specific engine and year Tacoma? Always, always refer to your manual first!

That should have been the very first thing that you should have done before actually buying a replacement battery.

A battery's amperage is very important to an engines performance, keep that in mind.

Yes, you can put just about any other battery replacement (regardless of amperage) in your vehicle and maybe it will start but that does not mean that it is the proper battery amperage load that your engine (alternator) needs or takes to have it properly running as your now finding/realizing this out.

Do yourself a favor and save yourself the headache and first find out the exact battery amperage that your Tacomas' year and engine takes and buy it, hands down, no questions asked. (Take back that other one and get your $ back).

After extensive research, I purchased the 'walmart battery' (Ie. an Everstart or Everready MAXX) for my wife's Rav4 about 9 months ago. Its a Johnson Controls battery- they make the Optima, Interstate batteries, Advanced and Auto zone batteries, etc. They also make the overpriced Toyota branded battery sold at the dealerships. I just took the cheesy walmart label off (I can't stand that logo), and slapped it onto the side of the battery. Appearance wise, its fine.

The battery actually measured 75 to 100 CCA's above what the battery's CCA rating on the sticker when it was new. Not bad for a $100 battery...and if it fails in 3 years, then there is a pro-rated warranty to help me buy a new one. If it fails after 3 years, then its only $100 battery. I'll probably be buying this battery to replace my 6+ year old factory battery proactively. Just don't buy Walmart's $40 2 year battery.

 

I just checked my 2-1/2 day old 750 CCA rated Everlast Maxx, 841.8 CCA¹. This is a thing I do with new batteries using this ; I record the values and every six months or so when I remember check 'em again. Late last summer I caught the decline of the battery in my wife's '03 Highlander (the internal resistance had jumped indicting a bad cell) just before she was to leave for a trip to LA to visit a cousin--saved me a lot of "OMG, WTF" long distance BS.




Note: The LCD display shows the internal resistance units as MΩ, megaOhms, This is incorrect the unit is mΩ, milliOhms. I brought this to HF's attention 3 years ago--AFAIK it has not been updated. It is nonetheless an accurate and useful tool.

¹ - The HF analyzer displays voltage at the time of test, internal resistance and CCA. Just an hour ago it reported 12.96 V, 3.51 mΩ (milliOhm) and 841.8 CCA for the new battery. Internal resistance is the "biggie", CCA is calculated from that. When the internal resistance of a car battery rises to 5.5+ mΩ it's on it's headed South, at 6.0+ it's time to replace it. Low internal resistance, as compared to baseline and periodic measurements, indicates a shorted cell...

 

I wanted to mention that my old battery, a 5-year-old Everstart Maxx 750 CCA unit, had tested 5.65 mΩ internal resistance and 545 CCA the day I replaced it. Starting seemed sluggish, that is why I tested it--it got replaced before starting was nada...

 

i also went from the stock 27F battery to the smaller 24F battery (as 27F's are hard to find, and the 24F's come stock in non tow packages... but also have more CCA's than the 27F's) I went with the wallmart maxx battery as well and have had zero issues. Even when its balls cold in the mtns when im skiing it hasnt had an issue.

The stock 27F battery lasted all of exactly 3 years before it took a shit.

 

Purely coincidental (but there may be a pattern here); according to the paperwork I received with my one-owner 2009 the original owner accepted delivery on May 24 of 2009. he replaced the OEM battery on July 3rd of 2012 (3 years, 1 month) with the Walmart Everlast Maxx 24F I just replaced on Monday (4/3/2017) 4 years, 10 months later...

 

Anyone have any feedback on the Sears Die Hard 27F batteries? The specs seem comparable to oem, curious because I never seem to see their batteries mentioned in all the threads about batteries. I have a 2012 and know my time's coming-checked at Costco and WalMart for 27f, will probably get at Autozone when needed. I live in NorCal where summers are hot and when you read on Sears batteries they make one for the hotter climates but not available in CA. I may try to buy one this summer when I'm traveling through these "hot" states- just wondering if anyone knew much about them.

 

DieHard batteries used to be just about the best there were--at one time they were guaranteed for the life of the vehicle in which they were installed. That and an effective ad campaign created the image they were magical gifts from above. The DieHard Platinum AGM batteries, now discontinued, were top shelf units made by Enersys. The lines still sold are made by Johnson Controls same as Duralast, Everstart, ACDelco, and 20 or so other brands.

The DieHard brand still has a lot of value, so it will likely be the next thing Sears sells off in their desperation to stay relevant. IMHO grade for grade they are no better than any other battery and certainly not worth paying a premium price for...

 

Thanks for your info, latest pricing was $111 on sale which put it about the same as autozone. I don't have any big needs when it comes to a battery but I did want a 27f, not the 24. In my area that leaves me with autozone-I did talk to an employee at Costco about their lack of 27f and he said for them it was a limited market vehicle wise. I did buy an Antigravity pps so I will keep what I have until it dies.

 

To save my "googling" it what is an "Antigravity pps"?

Costco now sells Interstate batteries are these better than the old Kirkland branded ones?

 

Warranty is just 4 years (full replacement but nothing after that). For 3-1/2 times the cost of the Walmart 24F Maxx (750 0° CCA) with a 3+2 warranty (3 years full + 2 years pro-rated) I'd expect more than that. I guess if your conditions require 1080 0°F CCA and your wallet can support the load (no pun intended) then why not. But being retired (fixed income) in NE Florida where "cold" is 45°F the $94 Walmart Maxx fits my needs nicely...

 

I found the walmart 24f for around 100$ and looks like I'm going to go that way, any thoughts on interstate batteries? My costco carries them
