Has anyone with the howling rear end gone into the rear?

To me, it's never sounded like the ring/pinion. It's more of a bearing whir, IMO.
I'd need more facts to form a proper opinion; one way or the other.

I'm with you; it needs to go to a differential shop for proper diagnosis.

Might make the minivan engine feel more powerful.

I really wouldn't expect a noisy bearing to live very long. Definitely would expect a failure in 10,000 miles.

Lol. No. I just got tired of reading useless posts about it and was hoping to poke someone with the problem to do something about it. It's really just a response to all the bitching I read about it. I just wanted something productive on the topic.

We complain, because we have issues, that technically, Toyota is supposed to fix. 40K is a lot of money to spend on something that has problems that Toyota flat out refuses to fix. I dont know about you, but I work very hard for my money, and I refuse to let Toyota get away with not fixing it. I also refuse to spend even a dime fixing the issue.

If you guys think that Toyota hasnt checked what you are suggesting, youre wrong. They know the issue, they know how to fix it they are just looking to get away with not spending the money to do so.

They've obviously been aware of the issue, they've spent thousands replacing carrier assemblies for the problem just based on TW member experiences alone. The FTS I met with, rode-along with, was using a recording device to get sound measurements. This was over 6 months ago and he said they were actively working on researching a solution for a field fix. He did say it was a well-known issue among Toyota engineering.

If the rollers are flat spotted, I could.

    10,000 "feathered" miles?

Makes me wonder what the issue is. Cost?

Maybe. If it were the case I'd expect that would be an easy QC, supplier fix though.

10,000 feathered miles..... I did forget that was part of the problem.... Do all of the howling events only occur when feathering or do some have it all the time?

Cost or my guess is a supplier/subcontract issue. Toyota may have to issue an ECP and contract mod to get this solved. If they are being delivered within spec but there was no contract requirement specific to the "noise issue" the vendor may balk and it would cost more for Toyota to fix future production lots. Also how much of a can of worms will this open up for all of the existing trucks out there that may need to be fixed, if the fix is not something easy or cost-effective.

Makes sense. Did anyone ever figure out if it was only an issue on the new 8.75" rear ends?

I had the Optional 3.08s over Regular 2.73s and ended up going with 3.55s in mine and like them.

Toyota already told me changing tires to larger ones alone can void driveline warranty.

Add in lift and it's void.
But if you're paying to get it looked at etc you'll likely be getting it fixed as well. So them not fixing it if they come out with a fix won't be an issue other than you paid for it.

I'm really starting to wonder how the hell it's lasted this long without a fix

I see it as a Vendor/Supply issue too, if the current one is unable to correct the issue and cannot live up to the contract then Toyota needs to find a new Vendor that satisfies quality and durability and give them time to ramp up production, plus be able to resolve the ones currently on the road.

They are "sort of" lying, but it gets you into a pissing match. Per the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act they have to prove that whatever you "did" caused the claimed warranty issue--but when it comes down to the wire guess who has the deepest pockets, and highest paid lawyers and "experts"--hint: it ain't you...

And right of way for first refusal... unless you go in with lawyers (or a gun) they aren't likely to comply with your demands.

Magnuson Moss is only in the US anyways. But yes if they want to be pricks they can point to anything that isn't on it originally as the cause

Sure. Toyota should fix it. It doesn't appear to be happening.
