I don't know beyond rebuilding these trucks. Cast iron never bends. It breaks.
I've heated and bent these spindles back to shape several times(I know, not supposed to).

If they are cast, then it is an odd form of casting.

    Ahh classic single misused word.

    You're talking about cast IRON.

    The spindles are cast STEEL

actually different believe it or not.

    Find me a quote.

There is very little difference between the two.

There is very little possibility that a manufacturer would use something that shatters vs. Something that bends for this application. Please educate me.

Basic difference is in the carbon content, cast iron has carbon content generally above 2%, while almost all steels have a content less than 2%.
Impact resistance is a huge benefit of lower carbon content, which is especially important for something such as, say, a spindle.
There are many websites that explain the differences between the two and the materials and processes for both. For example:

    Thank you for that link.

This reinforced what I had learned 1st hand.

Neither BD or I were completely correct.

Our spindles are cast to closely resemble forged parts. The difference is they are formulated to withstand shock without shattering. (Only paraphrasing)

Oddly enough, these cast parts can be heated and bent without shattering. I knew they could be heated, but never for once thought they were cast iron or steel.

Accept my apologies for producing incorrect data.

Mine are setup like you have in the first picture. Took a bit of work to get them to line up perfectly.

That being said, mine hit the coil bucket as full stuff:

Might be better to keep them as outboard as possible.

    Eh..both learned something.

Because you are right that they bend(plenty of folk have bent their spindles).

you're now mixing up slang with fact. Its steel, not iron. everyone just calls it angle iron

    Good link!

Going back to the original question, what is the point of heating the spindles before welding in the gussets?

Well MIG is a very hot form of welding. I mean, they are all hot..duh. But MIG will spread heat throughout the part very quickly causing warp to occur.

This is why stitch welding is done with MIG.

It creates so much heat that it it can warp the spindle. It does this because the heat starts on one side and slowly spreads as you weld.

Why does preheating help? because if you heat the whole spindle up, then its all hot. Not just where the weld occurred and started spreading from there.

    make some sense?

Not preheating it can set you up to bend the spindle before you even leave the shot. Even shear it due to how the steel was heated up and cooled.

I want to know how exactly we came to the conclusion how and what the spindles are made of? Any supporting info?
