Front Diff. drain plug stuck......

I was trying to change my front diff. fluid today, but for the life of me couldnt get the drain plug to break free. I tryed everything(except an air gun). I was like trying so hard! Any idea's? It isnt backwards threads right?

nope...righty tighty...lefty loosy. sometimes, they are tight as hell...and being a hex head....more of a pita. may need to get a socket type hex head and use a breaker bar.

 

no there both 10mm hex. From what it looks and feels like. And Will, I was using the socket type, and a breaker bar, and it still didnt budge!

 

damn. may have to try using an impact gun on a low torque setting.

 

try a little heat try it after you go for a ride or use a propane torch i had the same problem

 

It was warm and I might have to try some heat, or just get a bit for my Impact gun and just do a low setting like Will suggested.
Well maybe I will do it next weekend, along with my new brakes. (Slotted Rotors and Hawk LTS pads, and wheelers Brake Lines front and rear)

 

yah i know what ur goin through there, changed my fluid a few weeks ago and it did the same thing to me. all i ended up doin to get it off was gave the head of the drain plug a couple good whacks with a hammer and it did something freeing it up somehow. it sounds a little fucky i know but thats what happened

 

huh... Well maybe I should give that a shot first. Give it a little taparoo with a mallet or something.

 

Make sure you loosen the fill bolt first so you can guarantee that you can refill the diff after you remove the drain bolt. A little Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster might help too.

If your 10mm hex socket is long enough, put a 10mm box end wrench on the hex and put the hex/wrench combo into the drain bolt. Tap the end of the wrench with a hammer. Its a ghetto impact tool but a hammer and wrench often works better than a breaker bar.

Ive used a breaker bar and a hammer, but still nothing. I think I might try some PB on it next time, maybe then it will break loose. Hopefully!

 

If all things fail--- take to dealer and have them break-it free,they may be kind and charge you 0. Good Luck

 

put the hex socket on a impact driver, give it couple of good smacks then try the breaker bar again. try this a few times if it doesnt work the first time. the impact gun may work but should really be last resort(on drain plugs). the impact driver can free things in the same way without the chance of rounding out the hex, leaving you fubared. oh and yes if all else fails let the dealer break it.

every bolt has a torque value,sounds like yours is grossly over torqued and probably ready to break from to tight.
i would replace it with a new one
if it was serviced by someone like a jiffylube/midas then i would address them.

 

the fill plug should always be removed first, to insure proper draining.

 

not exactly. the reason you remove the fill plug first is to make sure you're able to refill the diff. ....you'd be screwed if you removed the drain plug first and then couldn't get the fill plug out.

 

yeah that kinda goes without saying. but still air flow through the fill hole allows for easy draining. making it a faster and more effective service. thats what i was saying. any tech will always remove the fill plug first..

 

I got the fill Plug off no problem. And I will be trying again maybe this weekend, If the weather is descent. Thanks for all the tips guys!
