    Can you define "hunting"

I chalk up going from 6th->5th->6th as that's how it's going to respond having 2 overdrive gears. Yes, it will drop to 4th on a grade, and I have never had an issue with it holding speed at 75mph on cruise control regardless of what gear it decides to do it in.

I'm not saying it is right or it is wrong, but there seems to be a wide degree of tolerance for how the transmission shifts - for me, I don't have a problem with it, maybe I'm more "tolerant" whereas others see it as a problem.

That aside, if you are concerned if the truck is going to take you where you want to go, it will.

I test drove an AT and couldn't stand the super high OD.... at 70 into a headwind it simply couldn't stay in OD. My 2nd gen could (lower OD) so I felt I would be going backwards.

I live a few hours east of you in the Sierras. No problems for me either.

That's what I needed to hear. Mine hunts all over driving around town. ECT holds it more than I'd like, tbh, but I prefer it to the shifting more constantly, I guess. For highway driving, I haven't noticed, but I run 80 on highway.

You can edit the title. And yes, a few people have switched. But for Houston traffic, you probably made the correct decision.

Get some more miles on it. Mine has settled down. I have about 3k on the ODO.

I've got 10k on mine and love it. the Gear shifting and the slow on the take off have kind have fixed themselves. I think it could be a computer learning thing. Also, I have learned that below 3000 RPM its a dog due to the Atkinson-cycle. Once Mr. Otto takes over... its gone. I've cruised on the freeway with my instant mileage meter at max MPG (30???)

As for your plans, the off road is great. I take mine out and do some crazy stuff. For long overhands you have the gas mileage as long as you don't rafe on it.

One of the thinks that I have done is just enjoy the ride.

That is how I would define hunting... perpetually shifting up and down. I've always heard that a transmission that hunts will burn up. For this reason you need to stick it in a lower gear, which to me negates the purpose of an overdrive.

"Hunting" is acceptable and understandable for elevation changes an whatnot. But not on a flat road, which is what I experienced.

My issues with the transmission have nothing to do with "hunting". Sure, it's a double OD tranny, it's going to shift. I don't care about that.

Even after the TSB, my truck STILL lunges a second or two after you put it into gear (either R or D), has a massive clunk during that first stop after you take off in the morning (worse when cold), feels like you're hitting potholes in the road at 55-60 mph even though you're driving on a smooth highway, jerks repeatedly right before a downshift when you increase pedal pressure ever so slightly, does the same thing in S4 - gets all jerky like it's cutting out or "missing" if you give it gas in 4th gear and it doesn't downshift to 3rd, is very slow to downshift regardless of mode and last, but certainly not least, feels like it has about the same HP as the old go-cart I had when I was 7 unless you're standing on the throttle past 4000 rpm. My truck cannot stand to lug around town but decides it's OK to shift to the highest gear available at 25 mph which forces me to us S mode.

This is the 3rd Toyota truck I have owned in over 26 years of driving. The other two had 22RE's and were both automatic. This one feels like the LEAST powerful of them all.

That is the future of conventional automatic transmissions. Double overdrive is idle at highway speeds and overdrive is just above idle, there's no torque available that low in the RPM range. No incline needed, a slight headwind will do.

No worries, I take the good with the bad and just try to learn from it. Question for you auto guys, is there any to shift to S4, then up to S6 without it first hitting S4? I hated doing that to it the first time I tried "standard" mode, so I never did it again.

I loved the gen 3 manual I tested. I need the long bed and torque so gen 2 it was for me.

I have the 2.7 AT and sometimes wish I had gone 3.5 MT until I sit in traffic, hardly move, and remember why I specifically wanted the AT in this one.

Live in Florida though so not many hills, but a small headwind on the highway does seem to freak this transmission out... Have about 6k on mine got better after a few thousand miles. Sorta used to the goofy transmission though, had a 2015 Silverado that was much worse.

I'd say give it some time, you probably won't lose anything value wise in a few months compared to now so might as well let it settle in and see.

Yup you're right. Not to beat a dead horse, but Kansas has 75mph speed limits. As I type we currently have a north wind of 12mph.... and THAT'S what we call light winds.

    The math doesn't work.
