I'm thinking about giving my son my 2010 TRD OR and buying a newer 2nd generation (3rd generation is a no-go). Are the 2013-2015 2nd Gens all good? Is there such a thing as a bad model year in the 2013-2015 range?

    Thanks.

I have a 2014 TRD Sport and haven't really had any major issues with it or anything like that, so... I'll say 2014! :D

I had a 13 now a 15. I would say either a 13 or 14. They had the clock in the dash and temp compass mirror. 13 had backup camera in the mirror. I think the 14 had it in the radio. Also 14 and 15 the silver color changed to silver sky metallic which i like better than the older silver streak mica.

I can confirm the backup camera on the radio for the 14 and the clock in the dash, even though I swapped mine out for a non clock pc since I upgraded my non nav unit to one with nav, which has the clock there.

Since you are going from a 2010, some things to think about 2012+ models in general:

V6 added the electric smog pump and air switching valves which become unreliable after a few years. Also crowds the engine bay if you want to add a CAI, OBA pump, 2nd battery, winch solenoid, etc.

Newer steering wheel design requires you to take a hand off the wheel to sound the horn. To me, this is a big deal, since the horn is the most frequently used button in my daily commute.

I have a CAI and fit OK with my smog pump... but I don't have any of the other stuff, so it might be an issue if you try to add all of that... I can see the crowded engine bay thing in that case.

I am concerned about this smog pump, is there a work around? What is the cost of repairing? Can I DIY it?

I would never add a CAI, a waste of money imo.

I've got 85,000 on my 2013 Baja and have no complaints, been really reliable and I have had a lot of weight in it and gone long distance.
I just swapped out my head unit to a Pioneer and now have the backup camera in the mirror and in the head unit...
I added the wheeler overload spring and that really sorted out the kardashian saggy arse that I had going on, due to all the loads of rock, slate and sod that I have had in the back.
The smog pump does take up a lot of the spare room on the passenger side of the engine bay, however there is still enough room to mount an electrical distribution box for all your aftermarket goodies behind it.
I am planning to keep her to the 200,000 mile mark.

What matters is the overall condition of the truck, mileage and price. In a specific model you might want, all of them are fine.

But if you had 3 lined up, all same condition and priced correctly for the year, I'd pick a '13. Only because they have a few more gadgets or prewired for gadgets than the '14/'15.

It's not that big a deal, but it does make a couple of tweaks easier.

thanks for the reply can you explain the gadgets that the '13 has over the '14-'15? Thanks.

I had a 15 and for less than a year. Traded in on an FJ cruiser. If my 10 was still a good reliable daily driver I would just keep it and get the kid something else or step into the 3rd gen.

One off hand is the rear view mirror setup. There is a plug in the overhead that allows the autodim/compass/temp/rearview mirror to be added (if it doesn't have that)

IIRC the '14's 15's don't have all that. Seems like I've read of a couple similar items as well.

Like I said, not really that big a deal. Just nice if it's something that you want.

The smog thing is only a complaint on the 2012 models from what I gather. It's about a $2500 fix iirc, but they were supposed to have fixed it at the factory from 13' on. I have a 14' trdor and it's been great. It's my #1 favorite vehicle I've ever owned. No temp/compass display but I have the clock in the dash. The steering wheels feels great, it's a nice leather wrapped wheel, a bit thicker than it's predecessor in the older models, but I genuinely like it more.

I have a 2012 (same updated body style as 2013-2015), supercharged and have about 55,000 miles on it. Ive had zero issues. I'm sure you'd be safe with any of those years.

As someone with absolutely zero bias I decided to investigate the various idiosyncrasies of each unit until I had a comprehensive accumulation of datasets to analyze. After many seconds of intense calculation and examination I'll disclose my objective conclusion: '14 is the most bestest year model ever.
