Old Car BS thread

Soooooo smooth now. Zero play and they swivel like butter. The old pins and bushing were so wasted that you could clunk the spindles up and down, lol. Can't wait to see how she tracks and steers with the new ones.

 

I saw a 58 Impala like this one. Not quite as nice a paint job but for its year it was still in good shape. I thought it was an old caddy at first then I saw the Impala logo.

 

1934 Ford Vicky, all steel body, 383 Stroker, turbo 350, TCI powder coated frame, four bar suspension, coil overs, AC, leather interior, jet coated exhausted, 20 gal stainless steel gas tank, halibrand polished wheels, front disc brakes, drums on the rear and the best, my drivers side sun visor autographed by a Dave Kindig "Kev Dog" from the Velosity Channel "Bitchen Rides"

 

Not to drag this thread back from the dead here, but I recently picked up a nice A833 with the Overdrive top gear and was considering swapping it into my '69 for while I do a quick refresh on the non-OD A833 that's currently in there (mostly gaskets, synchros, and bushings). Anybody know if I can use the current bellhousing, or will I need to find one that's OD-specific? I'm finding mixed opinions online about it and I'd rather not have a lousy surprise when I take it all apart and find out that I'll have to do a high-speed refresh to minimize my down time during peak cruising season

 

Im not a mopar person but heres an article...it mentions about a bigger drive pinon bearing and bellhousing drilled out. hope this helps.

I wonder if I can swap the retainer...

Edit- Although, in that article they're swapping a 3 on the column for a 4 on the floor. Different transmission housings on those two units. Bah.
Looks like I'm going to just have to do some exploratory surgery on it when I get her out of storage, haha!

It's going into my 1969 Dodge D100.


The truck started life as a column-shifted 3 speed and was converted to a floor-shifted non-OD A833 4 speed from a 70's Dart sometime in the 80's.
So I've got the correct bellhousing for a standard A833 already bolted to the 318 in the truck.

 

Cool looking truck. I like the space they had inside the engine compartment...

 

Yeah, and it's got nice big flat fenders underneath the hood, too, so usually when I need to work on the engine I can just sit on the fender, put my feet on the frame rail, and tinker in comfort.

 

Amazing how much simpler engine bays were in the older cars....now you have to take apart half of the engine components just to get to the spark plugs...and you cant even squeeze your hands into an area.

 

Yep. We overhauled the engine of my 1979 Olds Toronado (403 Rocket) inside the car because the lift couldn't get it out. As we jacked it up, the struts and springs just lifted the rest of the front end with it. My grandfather said "fuck it" and we worked around it.

You've no idea. Thing was a monster. The Toro came with a 350, but my grandpa ordered it as a GM manager, and he could have it built any way he wanted it. He wanted a rocket again (used to have a 62 rocket). I inherited it.

It took two people to get the heads in and out of there. We'd have had to tow it someplace if there was anything wrong, but thankfully new gaskets were all that was needed on the heads and oil pan. Replaced the 2-barrel Rochester with a 4-barrel Holley and my mileage actually improved from 6 to 9...12 highway.

We exclaimed that she never met a gas station she didn't like.

 

Now that's a real truck. I like it !

 

If that car was like anything else that big...I called them land yachts..they floated down the road...if you hit railroad tracks you barely felt a bump. The First car I drove long distance was a 67 Bonneville. Looked like this but not as good a paint job...
