    using this pic to help explain the switch.
    the white wire with the black tape stripe on the switch should be a constant hot. also know as the hot wire.
    the black wire on the switch is the switch leg. or switched hot. its the hot wire going back to the light.
    the white wire at the light is the neutral wire.
    the green or bare wires are the grounds.
    I hope this helps in your understanding residential wiring a little better.
