I like how LA guys and the guy out in the middle of nowhere have things in common with theft...

Was just going to comment how folks from LA seem to contribute to this thread.

Just went to the grocery store next door last minute before it closed. Bought some deoderant because I ran out today. Guy that I thought worked there was messing with all kinds of men's product bottles. Figured he was straightening up before closing. Then I realized he didn't work there and could smell some aftershave. Guess he was just sampling them to see what they smelled like. Then he pulled some hair product off the shelf and put it on... yup headed out the door after that lol. Guess he had a hot date and was keeping all his $$$ to spend on the lucky lady.

See, there's so much local culture to benefit from, even going about the simple things in your day to day. I don't know if you saw my little blurb about trying to fix taco 2k but...

    Here's a little anecdote...

I was driving around to auto parts stores looking to make my truck run better. I pulled up to a downtown location and began removing all kinds of vacuum hoses from under the hood to match up with what they had. I didn't have a flashlight and it was about 9pm.

A guy in a Celica pulled up next to me while I was doing this and began doing something under his hood. He asked me if I knew how to remove the headlight bulb. I showed him how and went back to what I was doing.

I took all the hoses inside and spent awhile matching inside diameters with what they had, then bought all I needed and took them back out. I started throwing it all together and realized, I can't find where the damn hose plugs in under the throttle body. I felt around in there awhile, peered at it, groped around some more, squinted at it again - couldn't find the fucking thing. It's dark and I don't have a light.

I go back in and ask to borrow a flashlight. The clerk looks and says they don't have one and I can't use one from the shelf. I walk back out and resume searching. The Celica guy comes back out and I ask him if he's got a flashlight. He activates the light on his phone which I don't want to take from him so I'm trying to direct it under the throttle body where the connection should be while I'm feeling around under there.

As we're in this process a junky girl walks up and asks if we have something to light a cigarette. I shrug her off and continue with this awkward endeavor. I cannot for the life of me find the damn connection. The girl volunteers that she has small hands and can maybe reach in there easier. Frustrated, I accept and show her an example of what she's looking for and where it should be located.

The girl feels around in there like I've been doing for the past 10 minutes, suggests looking from behind the engine or underneath and uses Celica guy's phone. Sometime after that she reaches up under the front of the manifold and says "I think it's there" I look where she's pointing and sure as shit it's hidden behind some rubber guard thing right in the front. I let the guy with the Celica off the hook with a profuse thanks and give the girl ten bucks.

Better entertainment value than a cheap flashlight.

I REALLY NEED A CAMERA, or a phone, or a camera phone... So I've been driving around with this bald eagle wall plaque thing with a real furry feathery fake eagle mounted on the grill with some blond doll hair like a toupee. Damn is it funny to see people's reactions. If they get it they either laugh, give a thumbs up or look disgusted.

I did read this on the other thread. I've given it some thought:

I feel like this is one possible ending. Others include you help the junkie girl recover and you get married, all three of you become embroiled in a tragic love triangle that ends with someone running off to Mexico trying to leave the past behind them, or finally, she runs off with the Celica guy's phone. I mostly expected the last one to be how the story ended, but I'm glad you ended it the way you did ;)

    (I know it's non-fiction)

That's good man, no I tried to describe it objectively as it happened and realized it sounded oddly intimate and perverted. Funny how working on cars with complete strangers in the Autozone can do that.

Oh and random observation - our avatars have something in common. Yours is obviously a scene from a movie based on a book by a Maine author. My avatar is a picture of a farm I passed every day on the way to high school growing up in Maine. Bam. My mom's best friend lived next to King and said that he had gargoyles on his house...

So do you have any insight as to what created the demented imagination of that author having grown up in roughly the same local?

The avatar is kindof a take on my relationship with my basket case salvage vehicle purchased 12 years ago now "Come play with us DANNNY... for ever and ever and ever..."

Extreme isolation that goes with living in the most heavily forested state, having his dad leave his family when going "out for some cigarettes," and seeing his friend hit and killed by a train contribute w/o a doubt... The way he writes his settings - I was always able to picture places I knew when reading his stories. In my imagination The Mist started at my grandfather's lakeside camp, the Marsten house from Salem's Lot was a house also on my way to school, The Shining took place here:

These are all in my imagination, but it felt like everything he wrote about outside of fantasy stuff like Dark Tower could be visualized by things I saw in real life. Even the way he would describe the climate with heat and humidity was just like I could imagine from hot summer days and nights. I like his writing (not just because I'm from that state) - too bad I'm not into horror much these days. If I have time I might get into the Dark Tower series some day though...

I used to read a lot of his fine works of literature as a young adult and always marveled at the diabolical outlook on the supernatural as being a playground for mankind's whimsical malevolence or the retribution thereof.

Fine works indeed. no, its entertaining though. There's plenty of movies that were attempted but I think the shining is the only one that held up maybe just due to the kubrick - nicholson thing.
