2017 Tacoma needs new engine block!?

I still don't get it, OP I understand you're upset, you got dealt a bad hand of cards with your new truck, but Toyota and the dealer is doing exactly what they are required to, which is fixing your truck under warranty. But you insist that you DESERVE and are ENTITLED to a new truck instead. Come on dude. I already told you my scenario, I didn't DEMAND a new truck 4 weeks in when my 16 needed a whole new differential, neither did Smitty or Aero or the other guys. More than likely if you use honey instead of vinegar and are open and honest with Toyota I'm willing to bet not only will they fix your truck but they'll throw in a 125000/10year platinum Toyota warranty to make you feel better about owning the truck long term. I just don't understand the rational in why you think you deserve a brand new truck. Your situation sucks, I understand the frustration, but your expectations seem a bit off. I sat by and tried to bite my tongue, but come on. Like I said I understand 100% why you feel the way you do, but that dosen't mean it justifies what your wanting/asking for. And with that I'll shut my mouth and mind my own dang business. I truly wish you peace and a quick solution to your current situation as it does suck.

 

And a engine swap with an extended warranty, maybe 10/125 like you said would not be bad. He could ask for it because he is a bit anxious over the swap out so I'm sure they would do this.

 

They did for me and a few other guys when we had our diffs swapped out the first time, hell that may even be better than a new truck if he keeps it longer, as it will have a better warranty than the new one.

 

If they do that which right now I dont know that Toyota will...however a diff and a transmission are more simple to replace than an engine which is the heart of the truck...if they dont do everything just right then its back for more follow ups maybe even a failure again and if you think I want to take the truck out of state right away after having major work done that wont happen for a while of good solid service from the power train....its a lot of unneeded stress from a new car...if I wanted a truck w a rebuilt engine I would have bought used and paid less....

 

That is my thoughts. I understand this sucks and my diff is howling now and my truck is less than two months old. They will get a chance to fix it and I've been an attorney for over 20 years. I see no reason to make this a legal issue. Then again, an attorney is generally slow to sue for their personal matters because we know how much work is involved and I have learned that if you seek a fair resolution you will get it more often than not. This sucks for sure but it is not a life and death issue (thankfully).

 

Again I think your expectations and rational are a bit off. A differential (I had 2 replaced) isn't a major component of the truck? And I know this is still in the air, but I'm pretty sure you're going to get a fully built engine just dropped in and hooked up, I doubt they take it apart and rebuild it and like with my truck and from my experience with most dealers they will likely put the master tech on your truck for this job, not some 19 year old oil change kid. And your carfax won't show a rebuilt engine, just state warranty work, your resale won't go down and I almost guarantee if they install it right you won't have any further issues, and even so if they offer you the 125k/10 year warranty you're covered. But seems like you have your mind set.

 

Engine gets replaced and you get an extended warranty. End of story.

Precisely, I went this route, they replaced my diff twice, finally they agreed that a new truck was the best option. But I gave them the chance to fix it, the chance to make good by me as a customer (complimentary warranty, one month's payment refund), I didnt go straight to I deserve a brand new truck.

 

Have you ever swapped an engine in a vehicle? It's actually not that hard. A few bolts, some hoses and electrical connectors, hook a hoist to pull it out, swap the accessories over to the new one and put it in. That's about all there is to it.

 

I would hate to be in his shoes BUT I kind of have been before. We had a 2 week old minivan quit on us in a very bad part of a major city we were traveling through when I was in the military. The fuel pump went out AND at the same time an axle burned out (yes, weird) and the dealer in a place we had never lived found several other things wrong and got on the horn with Chrysler and within a couple of weeks we had a new ride. It does not pay these manufacturers to build crappy cars. Sure, they cut corners and always will, but they know the fewer problems they have the more they make and the more they sell off reputation alone. They will try to be fair. If not then do what you have to do.

More than likely it will be a complete engine minus wiring and maybe manifolds. The factory has a warranty department and they will be the ones to tear down the failed engine and determine what caused the failure and use that data for future reference. I am the lead tech in my shop and I am the only one that gets engine replacements, re-power jobs, cracked manifolds, burned stators, etc. (all the good stuff).

What I don´t think you are understanding here OP is that if they did get a new truck, how is that any different than getting a new engine in your current truck? There is nothing wrong with the body, suspension, or anything else. You could get a new truck and it could have more problems than you have right now. Its a gamble either way, and I would just let the warranty work for me and roll on with the new engine.

You can´t use logic here . However, you are correct, its not as big of a job as it sounds. I can´t speak for pulling an engine out of a truck, but I know I can pull a gm v6 inboard from a ski boat, swap manifolds, starter, altenator, wiring harness, fuel rails, etc., and have the new one in and working on alignment in two days time. Alignment is a pain in the ass on an inboard if anyone is wondering.

 

Well when you have a truck you own and your engine is done in a week or two and you let them fix it and your happy with the work and that is your first response and you smile at em like you won the lottery then you post those pics and Ill be happy for ya...And who knows what else could be wrong or done wrong after it comes back from service....heck I wish I could remember what it drives like....plus it will have been half a month they have had the truck this week...took em this long just to admit the problem...how long do I let them work on it and they cant even give me a straight answer as to when they will get the part(s). For me it would be easier to get a new ride on Monday as an example vs waiting weeks for a new part and days to install seeing as they have already had the car for two weeks...that is why the lemon law states 30 days....so I have my rental agreement from the dealer as proof of when I got the rental...how long is it fair to me to be without the truck and go but well you have a camry....

Did they have your truck for a month at a time? And if it goes into 30 days or more am I suppose to sit w a crap eating grin and say gosh I love making these truck payments again I dont feel they see the big picture on what is right in this case...

 

Serious question here as I don´t know how this process will work, but, How long is the lemon law process and do you get a rental or are you just going to be driving your ¨Lemon¨ around during that time?
