I've seen a couple trucks with the hood painted black and I kinda like that look. I was thinking about doing it to my truck. I eventually want to do monstaliner on the whole truck but for now, the hood could use some paint so I am thinking about doing that. Has anybody else done this? If so, got any pictures? What would be the best route to go as far as paint choice...rattle can, bed liner, higher end paint with spray gun?

If you're not sure about it 100%, just take it off and plasti dip it to see if you like the look. If you're certain you want that look, then the time you think it will be until monstaliner the truck and the condition of the rest of your paint job is probably the determining factor in choosing which paint type to use. If you just want the hood black and don't care if it matches the sheen of the rest of the truck I'd say scuff it down with 400 grit really well and use dark gray rustoleum automotive primer and rustoleum flat black. Flat paint won't show the narrow fan of the nozzle nearly as much as gloss. It'll look meaner too. Lol. However if you want the hood to match the sheen and look of the rest of the truck this is the bare minimum I'd go with:

If it's going to be a long time before you monstaline the truck and you want it to look good, I'd say rent a compressor and gun if you don't have access to one and take the hood off and do it that way with some kind of automotive paint whether flat or clear coated.

Whatever you want to prep before you do the monstaliner (good choice).

Not a fan of the black hood look (to 90's ricer for me), but thats your call.

You could go with plastidip for an easily reversible choice, step out and do the Monstaliner, or use thinned Rustoleum with a lot of rolling and sanding. (Google $50 paint job).

I'd just go ahead and get started with the Monstaliner.

I'm not real sure about matching the finish of the rest of the truck. That's kinda why I was hoping some guys would have some pics. The paint on the sides isn't in very good shape, clear coat coming off. And the hood paint has a bunch of bubbled marks in it, I guess from engine heat. There's no heat shield on the underside.

I'll watch that video and see if I like how that turns out

It would look allright w/ red. Some colors look ricier than others.
Hey, Dodge did it for years and those are the most iconic cars they made.

If you are going to go with a color that's close to the OE color, so your door jambs and all are complimentary, order the sample kit from Monstaliner.

I bet you find a chip that's really close.

The sheen is how glossy it is, just following that video would get you really close to looking like the rest of the truck in sheen. You'll be the only one that notices any difference if you do it right. If you want it flat, way easier.

"Heat shield" does nothing for the paint. It's there to insulate engine sound. Paint and clear coat on hoods and roofs are the first thing go on cars due to the angle that the sunlight hits them - they take the brunt of the uv rays.

You can brush and roll jambs or just mask from the inside of the cab so it all matches. Half the fun of a new paint job is to get a new color! It might rub in places, but so does my oe paintjob so not much lost with doing that. Alternatively you could have an auto paint store match the monstaliner color and get a couple rattle cans of the monstaliner color in an automotive paint and clear coat it before monstaliner on the body panels so you can fade out onto the panels. You'd most likely end up with less build up and less rubbing.

The clear coat was starting to peel off the hood of my truck. So I Raptor lined it black. I'm happy how it turned out. Anytime it lightens up, I just use tire shine to darken it back up.

One body panel like a big flat hood will be pretty easy - just pull it off and put it on a good working surface and it should go smoothly!

lol I use tire shine to keep my bedlined wheels looking shiny. I clear coated them with rusto x2 clear, but that stuff doesn't do that great a job at keeping the bed liner looking good. If I'm really serious, I'll just re-clearcoat them. Not too much work either - clean them, mask the lug nuts, and spray. A little overspray on the tires just makes them look shinier in that area for longer than the tire shine too lol.

That's what I plan on doing. Right now I'm thinking I'll go with the color closest to stock, but my mind changes every day.

Ah, you learn something new every day. I thought that shield was there to deflect heat. It must have been a bad paint job or something...the paint isn't fading on the hood. Its bubbled up and rough like it got too hot or something.

I know! Half the fun of deciding I want to paint it is getting a new color! I'm not too concerned about the door jambs...I've heard they're a pain in the butt to paint but I don't think it would be that hard to roll them. Or take the doors off and mask from the inside like you said.

I work a Rhino Linings and did my hood a while back. Absolutely no regrets, I've seen a couple guys over here follow after I did mine so I must not be the only one who thinks it looks good

My hood was pitted pretty bad so I had the same thought. I also was close to doing hood only with monstaliner but didn't know how I'd like the look. So I sprayed it with about 6 coats of plasti dip. I'm leaving it like this for a while so I'm sure I like it. So far I like the black hood. I used the spray cans and you can see the stripes in it. I did this a couple weeks ago. If I still like it in a few months I'll peel it off and go with monstaliner or a similar option.
