If you switched, I'd like to hear what you think of the 3rd gen. I went to the dealer to pick up a part today and sat in a 3rd gen, but didn't have time to take a test drive. It seemed like they took my 2005, put in a new head unit, polished things up, and made the back seat of the access cab less useful.
I left asking myself if the upgrade was really worth it. So if you did it. Was it worth it?

From what I've seen, most are very happy. The salesman acted like an extended test drive would take an act of god, but I'll arrange one and see if I notice the same improvements.

I did and went with the manual transmission, very happy. Note,
I tested an at--was not impressed with the shifting and would have stayed with my '15.

I had a 2010 DCSB 6MT TRD sport and went to a 2016 DCSB 6MT TRD Off road with the technology and premium package. After reading about the concerns/gripes with the automatic transmission/new engine combo, I decided I had to have another manual. There isn't really anything that my 2010 had that I wish my 2016 also had. The 4.0L has a lot more low end torque than the new 3.5L though. So far, I'm very happy with my purchase. I use my truck mainly as a daily driver, and do very very little off roading. Fuel economy has been a little better for me, I can usually get 350+ miles per tank. My 2010, maybe 325 miles on a great week, best case.

Do you need to know, or care?
I went from a 2013 Limited to a 2016 Limited, would do it again in a second. No regrets.

They took a 2nd Gen, changed only the engine and transmission, and then gussied up the interior and remolded the body. Most of it is the same truck. Same frame. Same basic bed. Same basic suspension components.

I was hunting Tacomas 3-4 months before the 3rd Gen came out. Was very tempted to make myself wait. Glad I didn't. Search the forums and read about the plethora of problems before you jump into buying a new truck. If the issues don't scare you away - then you'll be a happy 3rd Gen owner!

Between this thread and a couple of others I'm really tempted to take my 2016 to the same shop that dyno'd my 1999 last year and overlay the dyno runs.

That would be what l would highly recommend, make sure you get at the minimum an overnight test drive, especially if you are considering an Automatic. The manual shifts really smoothly and helps make up for a little of the loss of torque compared to the 4.0.
