The grass isn't always greener, my 2016 V6 constantly hunts for gears.

I have a 15 4x4 I4 with a 5 speed and average around 23, not sure what you're doing. That includes cold start ups here in Alaska.
The manual does help the power issue in my opinion--I know you have a 6 speed, but the direct drive of a manual makes this thing like a tractor.

As for wanting something different. If I were looking at "more power" in a truck I would go with the tundra or chevy half tons--the tacomas are too limited for their price point.
I don't do heavy hauling like my father--he has a tundra--and have sometimes wished for more power but then realize I am already doing over the speed limit so it makes no difference.

    99 has 218k, 08 has 110k, and the 16 has 11k.

I have some added weight.. I have a camper with about 300 pounds of tools and parts always in the bed. I think it's crazy that this truck can supposedly tow 3500. I don't want a different truck I love Tacomas! Tundras get trash mpg so I heard lol amazing truck though!

I would suggest driving one that's broken in so you can get a real feel of that motor

Some people are OK with less towing capacity and not going off the line like mental patients. I can live with the 2.7L but some just can't.

Step up to a 2015 4.0L V6 in that case.

i got a '17 4-cylinder, no regrets at all. i don't haul anything so no need for me to get a v-6. however, i did notice the '17 4-cylinder engine felt like it had a little more power than a 16 one

Hmmm. Interesting. The dual vvti 2.7L was introduced for 2015 model, so the 15, 16, and 17 should all feel the same. But who knows, maybe Toyota changed something minor and it gained just a little power

I'm happy with mine so far. Fun as hell to tool around in as a daily driver.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I have an old 4cyl and back when my gen was in production the v6 was a pretty decent improvement. Your generation seems to have a lame v6 drivetrain anyway so you made just as good a choice as any other. The 2TR is solid and simple plus URD has a decent supercharger for it if you feel the urge for more power later on.

I think the 4cyl gets better real world MPGs.

70 percent of my miles are highway, SoCal streets and freeways have steep roads. 4x4 eats more gas too?

Zero remorse with my 4 cyl.
Regarding your fuel MPG comments, I also suggest researching what people are actually getting out of their V6.

My 6 mile commute each way is all streets with slight hills

    Only have 700 miles though

No regrets here, I'm on 35's with stock gears and I'm getting about 18mpg, and I flog the shit out of mine. I have a 7% grade for 8 miles on my way home as well, and I live in the mountains. Friend has a stock 13' 4.0 same drive and averages 16mpg.

V-6 option was minimum 10g's over my SR, not worth it in my book.

Pulling hills does bring the suck on 35's, but I can keep up with traffic no problem.

Mine doesn't like going up the pass either. That being said I never drove a 4 banger prior to purchasing.
