What to do with a sh*t Tranny in a new 2017 DCSB OR?

I bought a 2017 DCSB OR in January. I'm going to be paying this thing off for 4 years - so i'm freaking out.

It was my own fault for not doing more research and really test driving the thing for a long time on highway. Sure, it's a nice looking truck, but it's completely jacked up Tranny does not make up for it, especially as a daily driver.

My tranny is complete shit. Barely shifts from 1st to 2nd at all, hardly ever will go to 3rd. It will only go up to 35 mph or up to 65 mph on it's own - and that's it. Ever. The thing lags so bad it's ridiculous. I'm getting like 18-20 mpg max. At first I thought it was because it was brand new - it was just learning its own gears. Then I thought it was because of the Stage 2 Icon Lift Kit, and Wheels and Tires I had installed. Now, I realize after 4500 miles in less than 90 days - and reading online - this is a factory model issue that may never get completely resolved appropriately because its so widespread, and is probably just the result of poor engineering/design.

My 2007 Kia drives better than this 2017 Taco. Absolutely ridiculous.

    It's turning into a nightmare.

What's the best way to resolve this? Based on my research from what most others have posted on the forum - there is no real fix. Is that right?

I wish I could just return it. But it seems like all I can do is start some kind of service ticket battle with dealerships and corporate that will basically amount to nothing but wasted time and energy? I don't have time for a time suck like that. I'm busy as shit. Is there a way to return this thing? Get it declared a lemon? Something? Buyers remorse after less than 90 days? I literally don't even want it anymore...

Should have just bought an F150 or Ram... f**k all this tranny BS. I just needed something that would drive legitimately - did not sign up for this. Big lesson learned the hard way I guess.

Toyota had a method to their madness. They wanted a high MPG rating so they purposely designed a fubarred shift pattern. But they included the ECT button that takes a second to push to get the real transmission with a little less MPG. I just make it part of my startup procedure. Hit the start button and the ECT switch.

Take it in for the tranny TSB update (same update as the 2016's). Had the same/similar issue and after the update it's a new truck...........so far.

I feel bad for ya. I have 1k on mine and I'm happy so far. I keep turning off the radio and listening to the truck, everything seems good.

Have you had the fluid level manually checked? It's time consuming to do correctly, so most dealers shirk the effort. Many units are a qt or more low.

Have you had the ECU reflash done?

Have you considered going back to stock-ish size tires and see what happens?

Have you considered regearing? Some claim this improves transmission function due to altering the relationship of MPH/RPM. Like what you altered when you went to larger tires, moving the wrong direction for this issue.

Or, you could just change your diff fluid with more Toyota OE fluid, and maybe solve the issue, like this guy apparently has.

    1. Check the fluid.

    2. TSB.

    3. ECT and S mode.

    4. Trade for a MT and row, row, row.

If you truck really wont go faster than 65 mph take it to the dealer to get looked at. That is not the typically transmission issues people have been having. I have had abnormal shifting patters, largely cured by the TSB. However, if I pass someone fast on a two lane highway I am doing 90 before I realize it.

At least you know its your own fault.

How high is your truck revving? Barely shifts from 1st to 2nd... These trannys shift to second at like 5mph. Hardly ever in 3rd? You have to be running at really high RPM's all the time or you just have no clue what gear the truck is in. If it is really not shifting then you need to take it to the dealer to be checked. My guess is that just like you didnt know what you were buying, you dont know what gear your truck is in or your just trolling.

The truck is only rated for 18-23 MPG. Getting 18- 20 isnt bad, Its a 4.5k lb truck not your sub 2k lb 07 Kia. You also lifted it hurting the aerodynamics and put larger tires on that take more work to turn. If you get over 60/65/MPG the MPG's start to take a big hit.

You have your answer right there. Take it to Ford or Dodge and trade it for something else so you can stop sounding like a little kid who had there candy stolen.

You know that time when you were sitting at the dealer and they made you sign a bunch of paper work to take the truck home? That was you signing up for this shit by not knowing anything about the vehicle you were about to spend over $30k on.

    I'm in same boat.

Tranny is terrible. Multiple reputable car enthusiast publications, consumer satisfaction polls, and a considerable amount of forum users agree.

    YET....

Every apologist just won't accept it as being true.

Will never buy another Toyota after this.

While I agree the auto is sub par, sticking a lift on the truck only made it worse.

I'm feeling the same as you. I bought mine based on Toyota's reputation and the fact that every other car
you see on the road is a Tacoma.(it seems like) I thought it was a slam dunk, no brainer, can't go wrong decision.
I'm feeling totally let down by this truck and I don't know what to do. Maybe see if I can trade it in for a Tundra or
?? I traded in my Frontier to buy this and although the Tacoma is a much nicer truck in terms of comfort and all the
cool features it has, I really miss the six speed manual trans and the abrupt instant power that truck has. No bog, no lag,
no feeling that you're driving a 4 cyl instead of six. You step on the gas and the motor reacts. Buyer's remorse ?? Yeah,
big time. This truck is gutless !

I am no help to the situation for the OP but for any future buyer that is considering one, please arrange for an extended overnight test drive to make sure you like it.

a six cylinder engine doesn't produce massive amounts of power first off,so calling it gutless is pretty dumb. if you wanted real power you should have gotten a v8, you got a 6 cylinder so you got mediocre power. you should have done your research in what you needed in your vehicle and not blame the auto manufacturer for your misguided purchases, like they say knowledge is power, and bullshit walks, blame yourself

So the op should find some one who feels thier truck is shift happy to trade his truck that doesn't shift with.

Welcome to the daily transmission bitch fest, not like we have seen this show before.

Truck doesn't shift beyond 2nd, truck only does 35 mph or 65 mph sounds like the dealership should be looking at the truck.

    Good luck.
