The previous owner of my 07 had bought an ARE cap for my truck and had it paint matched. When I bought the truck he mentioned to me that he had spent upwards of $4000 CDN on it. I contacted ARE a few days ago and got a quote for the same cap and they gave me a price of $4400 for it, so the guy really wasnt joking. Its a nice cap, has remote unlock and a whole other bunch of accessories but its really not doing it for me.

After a few months of having the cap im starting to realise I really dont like the look of it. Im an Electrician so its super convenient to have a place to store all my tools and material and the rack on the top is great for carrying ladders and stuff, but it doesnt have that truck look with the cap on.

May not be the best idea but ive been thinking of selling the cap and getting a Tonneau Cover+Back Rack combo. So I can still store stuff and carry ladders if need be with the back rack. Wish Invis-A-Rack had a model for the tacoma as that would be perfect for my needs.. Cant imagine ill get much for the cap either

Anyone have any opinions on the truck with a cap? Should I sell it and get the classic truck look back or keep it cause its convenient? Anyone know of any other options for carrying long cargo/ladders that can be easily removed/hidden when not in use?

If your not a big cap guy, like myself. You can't get some serious cash from that for other mods on the truck!

    3" lift? A.R.E cap 285/70/17 moto metal 955 17x9

The front bed rail is 1"-11/2" lower than the side rails, you can get a taller gasket for it and then it should seal better.
I have the same cap and mine only leaks at the self car wash when I get frisky with the pressure washer, even then its minimal.

P.S. while you have the cap off to fix the front, buy a roll of gasket tape to replace the sides so you get a good seal all around.

P.S.S. I would keep it, the pros far out weigh the cons.

Up to you but I like the look of a cap. Where are you located? I've been looking for a used silver streak cap for a while. If you do decide to sell you know at least one interested part my now.

Edit: I see Ontario on your plate so we're probably not too far away.

Double edit: Your truck is a short bed right? Looking for long bed cap, damn.

I think it looks good on your truck but I'm old (55) haha...if you have the luxury of a place to store it I would definitely keep it. Just remove it and put a tonneau cover on for a while and then put the cap back on when you'll need it more.

I know it sounds like a pain but I did it for years, used the cap seasonally, in the winter months.

Sounds like you are a looks over function guy.

But you should price your tonneau/rack option before you sell. 'Cause that's going to eat up your 'fast money'. And add in your insurance deductible when the tools are boosted.

Seems to me there is a lot of value in a cap for a working man such as yourself.

I like caps. Fir $4,400 I would sell and get a different cap lol. You can buy lifts for the seiling of your garage to store caps when you don't want to use themo

    They're too damn useful.

I actually like the look of a cap as well.

Been looking at the Harken Suspension systems for that exact reason, my garage would probably fit it too. Id have to try and find how much it weighs though, I think those suspension systems have a max weight of 150lbs or something.

Yeah thats the problem for mine, it leaks whenever theres the slightest rain fall. Ive had to keep most of my tools and material in rubbermaid containers which worked for a while but then I found water pooled in the bottom of the containers which rusted even more tools and caused even more problems. How hard is taking the cap off? I assume its too bulky/heavy for one person to hulk off of the bed.

Someone recommended using 3/4 Sika Backer Rod in another thread for sealing the edges, seems like it would work as its compressible/non absorbent and everything

In a perfect world I would get both the back rack and cover off kijiji/craigslist for cheap. But in reality with the limited selection for short beds I would probably end up buying new and it would be around $1200CDN for the set which isnt cheap.

Im actually surprised to the responses here, more people saying to keep it rather than sell it. At this point I think unless I would be able to recover atleast 75% of the cost of the cap it would probably make the most sense to just keep it and try fixing up the issues I have now (sealing the sides so it doesnt leak)

Are you still interested in a tuneau cover? I have retrax pro. The only issue is that I am in Durango, CO.

While the original owner may have paid $4k for it, you might get $400 for it used. Keep it.
