Well going up the really steep part I'll have "ECT" on and I'll have my foot to the floor can't get pass 65 sometimes. I know I don't need to go any faster, but you how people drive that pass I want some pep to get out the way if I need to.

I really like my 2.7 auto 4x4 I live in so cal and it flows with traffic nice . (When traffic is moving) lol
However there are a lot of mountain areas in California that could be a challenge but those aren't my normal driving areas , but I could rip the 405 and the 5 the 2 no problem. And some of those are pretty steep.

    Zero regrets.
The engine's bulletproof, has plenty of power to keep up with (aggressive NYC/metro) traffic and operate off-road, and the V6 price was thousands more than my SR.

If you drive 40k a year, I would keep the four. It may be slow, but I have infinitely more faith it will go high miles compared to the 3.5.

No regrets here. I really enjoy it.

I bought a 2016 SR 2.7L 4 cylinder 5 speed 4x4 back in October 2015, have done a shit load of mods to it, lift, tires, wheels, radio, speakers, lce header, afe intake. Sliders from @Pelfreybilt are on their way! I have no regrets about buying this truck, it's a beast. Does whatever I ask from it and if I ever need a little more power I just downshift and run the gears out. I got 28,1XX miles on it so far and plan on putting a few 100K on it!

I made the switch from 4cyl to 6cyl, not 3rd gen though, and I was happy I did. I bought the 4cyl 5-speed due to the infamous reputation of reliability and belief that it'd save tons on gas. After getting almost identical mileage as a V6, I didn't see the point. My truck ran great, but the smallest thing would be noticeable with highway driving. Hell, I had a dresser poking over the cab by about a foot, and you'd think I had a parachute on the back of the truck. Could barely maintain 70mph driving down the interstate. Hills were annoying, and jumping out into morning traffic was nerve wrecking at times. After switching to the 6cyl, I haven't had the same issues. I see the same mpg, or maybe 1mpg at times. The pros of the V6 outweighed the cons easily in my eyes, and I'm happy with the end result.

Key point is 2nd gen. If you had done this with a 3rd gen, with the minivan engine and shift-happy transmission, you might have had a different experience.

Hey change the tires I did and got better mpg's it felt like a different truck don't ask me why. I was planing on putting the wheels on my TRD so when I got tires I ordered the same size tires on my TRD. Now I don't want to switch because of the difference it made on my SR. I haul alot of weight in my sr and am getting 18.5 mpg's before I was getting 17 mpgs. I still have no answer to why but it did make a difference. And I did not go with just a street tire I got AT's

Oh and I had changed the tires at 50,000 miles I have over 60,000 on it now and love the truck. My TRD is a great truck and does have more power but it was 13,000 more in price. I get around 20 mpg's on the trd empty.

I have the Double Cab 2.7 and I don't have any regrets. I drive sorta fast on the highway so I always turn on the ECT PWR mode while on the highway. Surprisingly, I get better MPG on the highway with ECT PWR mode on. I average around 21 MPG.

Damn, is 13k the price difference between a 4cyl SR5 and a TRD OR?

I have the 4 cylinder access cab, with 20,000 miles and have no complaints. My average MPG on the highway and town is about 20 MPG. I upgraded from a 2006 2WD 2.7L 5 speed manual and the current one is much stronger even though it is a 4X4. No shifting issues

The 4 cylinder trucks have the lowered geared rear end which I think makes a huge difference. Also the 4 cylinder has slightly higher torque in the lower RPM range than the V6 (No the 4 cylinder does not have more torque) but at lower RPM it is higher than what the 3.5L V6 has. This probably explains the shiftomatic behavior that people complain about the V6. The AT is a better for the 4 cylinder as well than the V6.

One thing I did discover, the AT on the 4 cylinder is slightly geared higher than the older manual 5 speed transmission. So If I drive the 4 cylinder in S5 on the highway, I am turning about 300 rpm less than what 5th gear in my older 5 speed did.

Also the MPG numbers that are advertised, are bogus, just as they say in the fine print on all the documentation. MPG numbers are taken from dyno testing at average speeds from 45 MPH and 55 MPH.

    Something no one thinks about.

All things being equal (same weight cab style) the 4 cylinder and V6 produce the same horsepower to maintain a given highway speed, thus the similar fuel mileage. Now of course the V6 has much more horsepower on tap, so acceleration torque and power is much more available. So if you only did highway driving the V6 would do about he same as the 4 cylinder. City driving is where the V6 guzzles gas more so than the 4 cylinder because drivers will tend to drive harder because the truck can.

When I was looking I decided if I went double cab it would be V6. But I went with the Access cab so I went with he 4, I don't tow or have much to carry.

Price. At least with the 2nd gen. I saved almost $10k by getting a 4banger Prerunner vs a v6 4x4.
