wind noise

my 2008 access cab has a loud wind sound from the passenger side in the back. Any comments or suggestions. Naturally the dealer said everything was fine.

 

I too have a 2008 access cab and have the same problem. I have had mine in five times now. I have called Toyota and got a case number which did nothing for me. I just got my truck back yesterday from the dealer and they are now blaming it on my Access tonneau cover. When I got home I started looking around and my passenger rear door has a much larger gap at the back of the door than the drivers side. I am not going to take it back again though. I will drive it another year and then go back to a GM, or Ford. In my opinion Toyota quality is not what it used to be. This is my fourth Toyota truck and I have never experienced the problems that I have had with this one. I have read that the Tundra access cab has the same problems.

I did get my rear springs replaced at the same time, so I did accomplish something.

I will call Toyota tomorrow and refer to my case number and state my displeasure with the wind noise. It is a shame because, other than the wind noise, I really like the truck.

Anyway, I don't have any 'excessive wind noise' from the pass side on my 08 access trd off-road. The entire drive is pretty loud above 65mph.. it's a truck with all terrain tires on it. There is very poor to no insulation in most of the cab (headliner for example), it's as aerodynamic as a brick, and it's a truck.

If you hate the road noise, get some fat mat, tear the inteiror apart and apply it. Adds about 200lb+ but it'll quiet it up. Also put street tires on it.

There is also some TSB's for the windshield seal, some trucks were having air leak by. I don't know how you could 'pinpoint' where the wind came from tbh... check it out. Also do you have the window rain guards? Those add a fair amount of noise (I know cause I added them on myself).


Honestly, any road noise never bothers me anyway, I usually roll 80-85mph with the windows down, rear window open, and the radio saying "MAX." I enjoy it.

 

If it sounds like a loud wazoo there's a TSB for it. High speeds and cross winds can vibrate the rubber sealant around the windshield. Otherwise its just wind noise.

 

I did bring that TSB up at one of my appointments and the service writer told me that they were not going to pull the windshield out for a rear door wind noise. I told him that if wind was coming through the edge of the windshield that it did have to have a place to go out.......rear door?

I am not whining as was eluded to above, I'm just not happy with this wind noise. I have been buying vehicles for 50 years and have never had a vehicle that is as noisy as this one. Why should I pay $30,000 for a new vehicle and then have to add noise-deadening material to the inside. That is just plain crazy.

 

my 2009 access cab has that wind sound,but mostly on the highway.in town only if there is a strong cross wind.

If I were you, bring it again to the same dealership. Talk to a different service advisor. It took me 3 trips for them to finally fixe my winshield noise in my '05.

Edit: You mentioned above that you've been to the dealer 5 times already. Don't waste your time there. Try to other dealership.

 

The five times is three times to one dealer and twice to another. I have the number for the Toyota represenative that I talked to before. I will just follow up with her and voice my displeasure. I am convinced now that this is something that is inherent to the Tacoma trucks and that is why they cannot fix it. By the way, it is a TRD Off Road model just like the black pearl pictured in the above post. Nice truck but somewhat disappointing.

 

Hey Tuffy, My '05 Access Cab has the same windshield noise at 70 mph or even less in a cross wind. Do you happen to have a number (if there is such a thing) for that TSB regarding this wind "leak"? Thanks.

 

My wind noise is from the rear doors. They blew it off and said it was my Access tonneau cover. That is the report that what went back to Toyota too. I called Toyota and they told me there is nothing more that they can do. I explained that I had it back to the dealer after 1000 miles with the problem, which was before the Access tonneau was installed. That did not get me any where, so like I said before, I will live with the noise. I do like the truck and will keep it, but everytime I get in a crosswind and hear the wind blowing right through the cab, I will think about Toyota's failing quality.

Sorry, I can't answer your question about the windshield noise, as I don't have that problem. Also, my truck does not speed up by itself and it does stop when I hit the brakes, so I guess I'm pretty lucky.

 

If a person buys a used 06 do they have to pay to have a TSB done? It does seem like the back end bottoms out a lot.

I have an '09 Tacoma 4WD with the TRD Off Road package and tow package with about 6000 miles on it and I have excessive road noise from the rear corners of my access cab as well. I took it back to the dealer from whom I purchased it and they said that they didin't hear any noise other than what was coming from the wind deflectors that I installed on the driver's door and passenger's door. It didn't matter to them when I told them that the noise was there the day I drove the truck home from the showroom and that wind deflectors don't make any noise. I was so angry that I wrote a letter to Mr. Toyoda himself advising him where I thought Toyota had gone wrong in recent years and what I thought they could do to turn things around. I also said that, unless they did something about the quality of materials in their trucks, this would be my last Toyota. About 3 weeks later I received a telephone call from Toyota Executive Offices in So. California. They listened to what I had to say and then sent me to a second dealer. I'm now waiting for that service manager to call me back with their decision (They heard the noise I was talking about and they want to drive another similar model truck under the same conditions to see if it also has the same noises). I have no expectations for a satisfactory resolution as I think it is a result of poor design and poor quality materials.

Bottom line is that Toyota quality of materials has degraded significantly since my 2000 Tacoma. I'm not at all happy with things like a plastic clutch pedal and a plastic bed (That is not a liner in the bed, the entire bed is plastic with a metal outer skin). I plan on keeping this truck for no more than 3-5 years and then I'm going to trade it in on something other than a Toyota - probably a domestic truck which I've had before and had good luck with.

Norm.........I agree with you 100%. I went to two different dealerships and neither could fix this problem. I have never had a truck that is this noisy. The last dealership I dealt directly with the service manager after calling Toyota.

When I got the truck back home I looked at the back of the rear doors at the top where it makes the bend. The gap on the passenger side is close to a half inch wide. It is definetly a manufacturing, or design flaw. They will not do anymore for me, so I will be like you and go back to a domestic truck. I think Toyota's success has run it's course and they no longer produce the better vehicle.

I have owned four Toyota trucks over the years and never had any problems, but just the way they are handling this one will turn me away.

I like the design, size and all other things about the truck, but I will not buy from a company who cannot admit that they have a problem and won't resolve it.

Charlie - Like you, I've had Toyota trucks before which is why I bought my '09. This is my 3rd Toyota truck with my first being a 1972 Hi-Lux. While the Hi-Lux was noisy due to it being a primitive design with no insulation, there was no wind noise like the new trucks. Also, the quality of materials in the new ones is really bad. In a carwash under the blower driers, the hood on mine riples so bad that looks like the Pacific Ocean.. While I love the truck's size and performance (I tow a 24ft travel trailer with it), I just can't take the poor quality. It was obviously built by "Bean counters" instead of engineers. When I can buy a comparible domestic truck with pedals still made of steel and a bed still made of steel for the same or less money, it seems to me to be the prudent thing to do.

Mike - My noise is not like yours. That whistling is typical of a windshield that did not seal properly. My noise is definitely from the rear corners of the cab and is more noticeable from the left rear than the right rear. Thanks for your post, it was helpful. I hope that you have some final success with getting yours fixed.

That's what mine sounds like. I had thought the TSB we a sure fix and that the only question was...Would I be able to get it fixed under warrenty?

I put a deposit on the Tac and plan on picking it up tomorrow. The dealer said that Toyota would not fix it under warrenty and that it would cost about $1000 to fix - so they took that off the price. And siaid If I squeak enough maybe I could get them to fix it and save the grand or if I end up paying for it then I am no worse off other than pain and suffering for my efforts.

I didn't think of the possibility that it never gets fixed.

My dealer is not willing to fight for me before I buy the car and they are willing to just sell it to the next guy (who doesn't take it to 65 mph on the test drive). I have been waiting for 6 months to find the right Tac - this one seems close so I don't want to let it go. Any advice?

Mike are they doing this all under warrenty?

 

I get considerable wind noise on the passenger side of my '05 double cab in crosswinds. I was just thinking maybe the weatherstripping was somehow compromised, but if it is also happening on newer trucks, maybe it is a design issue. I thought of trying to mess with the striker plate on the door latch to put a little bit more pressure on the weatherstripping but that would possibly bugger up things even worse. Maybe I'll just have to live with it since it only happens in crosswinds.

 

I did call Toyota corporate and the results of that effort was zero. In my humble opinion, Toyota has come to a point of resting on their laurels regarding customer satisfaction and quality. I am now driving my last Toyota product and will try a domestic vehicle next time.

In my original post I was reading where people are tearing out their interiors and putting a sound deadening material behind it. Why would a person go out and spend $30000 and then have to tear it apart to make it quiet?

I have no doubt that my rear doors are not made correctly and that is causing this wind noise. Toyota will not admit it and they won't fix it. My stero was a waste of money, as I have to play it so loud to hear it that it is annoying.

I would not take that $1000 from the dealer due to the windshield problem. I would tell them to fix the windshield with the $1000 and if they say no, you know that they are trying to cheat you. What would be their reason for not wanting to earn a $1000 to repair it?

I totally agree with you - As I said in my earlier posts. I hope that I can get rid of my Tacoma sooner rather than later. I only have about 6,000 miles on mine and I'm already tired of listening to the annoying noise !!
