3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

Checked my leaf spring U-bolts. They needed to be tightened. Torqued them to 52 ft. lbs. Is the recommended 52 ft. lbs. by Toyota enough? I know the 2nd gen's were recommended to be 37 ft. lbs. if I remember correctly. I torqued them to 73 as recommended by many on Tacoma World.

Went to 52 myself, good enough for me.

 

I have no reason to believe the manual is wrong. Check in about 1000 miles, and see if still tight. Overtorquing weakens bolts over time so I would not cheat in that direction.

Ok quick question I can find it anywhere. But the dealer gave me the oil pan plug gasket part number 90430-12028. The ones I had before were the blue colored ones with part number 90430-12030. The one the gave me fits but it seems to be different material and it's black. Did they change gaskets?

 

I think 90430-12028 is an older part #.

90430-12031 is the newer part #. I doubt it matters, but I have only ever been provided 90430-12031 with any toyota oil filter I've ever bought at a dealership.

 

Having Toyota finally check my transmission fluid level today infront of me after continued issues. Also having t-case fluid changed, as it takes 1.1 quarts and I didn't feel like buying 2 quarts of Toyota's genuine 75W. Also BSM sensor not working.

After these services, I'll probably never be going back to Toyota for any preventative maintenance. Paid to learn how useless the 25k Toyota Care plan is.

 

May be too late, but FYI Toyota transfer case fluid is sold in liters, should only have to buy one.

 

Thanks for your feedback. I feel better about opting out of any prepaid service from Toyota as I do all my own maintenance.

 

So 1 liter would have covered it? A quick garggle shows 1L=1.056 Quarts, our trucks call for 1.1

Changing my rear diff oil this weekend, bought oil online on Amazon and im lookin at $130!?

Yeah, not to beat a dead horse, but just for future reference for others reading. I haven't done it, but I suspect that since this is a Japanese vehicle designed with the metric system, that 1L would cover it. Yes, 1L is slightly less than 1.1 quarts, but I bet they are rounding to 1.1 qts for the US manual and that it's actually designed for 1L. And also, you only have to get it within 5mm of fill hole. So I have always suspected that 1L would probably cover it.

No guarantees though.

 

anyone know what is involved in the 20.000 mile service? would guess it is not cheap!

 

See post #1. Should be free. All maintenance up to 25k included with all new toyotas. Should be oil change, tire rotation and cabin and engine air filter change.

Anybody ever have a problem getting the filter element out of the housing? My daughter had a Mazda 3 and I tried 5 different tools and could never get the cover off the filter element.

just ordered a gallon of Redline and a gasket kit to service my rear diff. was 1 gallon enough for anyone else with an automatic 4x4 OR?

 

A gallon should get you there, refer to the number on the inside of your door jam and check that with the service manual to verify your rear diff takes 4.0 quarts.

I would recommend doing front and rear at the same time, 6 quarts would do the job and allow for a bit of overflow on both diffs.
