He put an icon lift, armor and bigger tires on it which makes this already bad transmission, worse. I think he needs to downsize tires or regear if he wants to run 285s --assuming he's running 285s.

To clarify Lift doesn't hurt it. Tires and added weight does.

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
if the OP has put on a lot of aftermarket lift and bigger/heavier than OEM sized tires that will really influence how the truck performs as opposed to a stock setup(obviously), and will probably effect the way a Toyota dealership will deal with his warranty issues or poor performance complaints also. but as usual the answer on 3rd GEN forum is always the truck sucks and Toyota needs to fix the problem that I created for myself and im not happy with the qaulity:facepalm:

the lift effects the geometry of the suspension parts outside of the design on the factory designed suspension, in turn effects the handling of the truck completely, Toyota didn't tell you to put it on the truck so you blame them again

I said "lift" meaning both lift and tires, as one usually follows the other.

To the OP..ya that' not normal but something else is at play here.......Toyota tranny quirks?..yes but I have the 2017 OR and while I do get the slight tranny annoyances at times ...for the most part I do get the rated MPG and get good highway performance ...it's not the same as my 2007 charger or my wifes Elantra GT but it is what it is ..a truck....and dispite the few Toyota quirks I would do it again over any.. GM ,Ford , or Dodge because it meets my needs....now , if I needed to do some serious towing then ya I would have gone maybe Tundra or maybe Ram ( ugh....ram owners!!..shiver.)..........anywho..get her checked because somethings not right...good luck, cheers!!

My 2nd gen was a truck... it didn't have shift issues or trouble pulling itself.

That being said, I think if the OP had NOT added all the extras, then complained, he'd have a legitimate gripe. But as of right now, not so much.

What surprises me is everyone keeps saying they bought the truck based on Toyota's reputation, ie the resale, reliability and most popular in the mid sized segment and then complain about how it drives. There isn't anyone in the automotive industry that says its the leader due to the most comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. In fact Toyota has always has a reputation of producing a very disengaged driving experience, uncomfortable seats with lower grade interiors aND technology. They just seem to run forever in a very lackadaisical fashion. If you add more weight or radically change the suspension, it may amplify it.

The trucks are popular but they've always been far from perfect.

Now I've always like them, know what to expect when I buy one and have realistic expectations in how the lower tiered truck will perform. It will never compete with the power and capabilities of a full size, if you need a truck that does then shop full size.

This. If I had purchased a 30-40k auto and hadn't done the requisite research/test drives/due diligence I would be too embarrassed to go online and bitch about my stupid mistake. It's certainly not like there aren't endless threads on the topic. I knew exactly what to look for when test driving my 2017. I wanted the manual transmission but it didn't come in the long bed so I decided I'd live with the auto and while it's not perfect, it's certainly not the total failure that some make it out to be. Not too hard these days to do a little prior research in this age of google. As always: Caveat Emptor!

I got on the interstate yesterday driving straight into a 10 to 15 mph headwind... put it in 6th, set the cruise on 78, exited 35 miles later and didn't touch a thing.

I think a lot of people have unrealistic ideas on how a pickup truck performs or in their minds should perform, its a truck,it doesn't have the handling characteristics of a Porsche,it doesn't have the suspension of a BMW, leaf springs do sqeek and make noises, its a 3.5l v6 not a 6.2l turbo diesel or my old GTO:der:that could pull a locomotive in 1st gear, its a 6 speed automatic transmission with a lot of shift points it cannot be custom made to each individuals likes and dislikes although Toyota has tried to improve it with various TSBs, also the rear howling, is it really howling!! or is it driveline noise at a certain RPM that happens to upset my fainting heart and I cant deal with life anymore cause of it, but hasn't caused any catastrophic break downs that we know of. only babies get what they want all the time
