Most educated post of the year.

OP, I'd wait another year or two and see what happens. There is no denying that there are issues with the current 3rd gen. I'd imagine they'll iron them out soon considering Toyota has a lot of competition now.

I traded my 013 tacoma for an 017 TRD offroad, carried it back to the dealer and had trans. fluid checked and trans. update done. Other than that no problems, and I'm happy with it.

Do you have factory suspension? I have a hitch carrier and my 2013 really squatted with about 200lbs in it. The carriers are rated for 500lbs. There is no way my factory springs could have handled that. I have Dakars now and am looking forward to seeing how they do.

An Add-a-Leaf. Dealer removed it with the recall. I went back and made them give it back to me and put it in my 2017 too. Popped the back up 3" on the Gen 2 and 2" on the Gen 3.

Sure does the job. The bigger moped has to weigh 150lbs alone? Or are they the same size...

I had two different 2nd gens and now own a third gen. I have neither the hate that some have nor the love that others have. I can summarize the changes in my view as follows:

1.Like pretty much every frickin car from BMWs to trucks, they moved from a higher displacement to lower displacement but more advanced engine with a higher number of gears to squeeze a couple of MPG more to satisfy the government. The result is loss of low end torque, and the transmissions shift a lot more often in search for the optimum. The computer takes some time to learn your driving patterns. This bothers some people, not others. I find that I can make the truck move just fine but I have to stomp on the gas pedal harder. If you tow a lot you will prefer the 2nd gen. My wife complains about her 2016 BMW in the same way (went to a lower displacement 8 speed turbo and she prefers the older engines..she like performance). Fact of life with newer cars...it is your government at work for you.
2.IMO the manual version of the 3rd gen transmission is better than the manual of the later versions of the 2nd gen. Not the engine but the shifting feels better to me.
3.The interior and electronics are in general better. Not as good as they should be for a 2016 model car, but better. There are a few exceptions like the loss of the drivers side column handle, but in general the interior is better. The screwing up of the rear seats in the access cab is something they did in later models of the 2nd gen a few years ago. I also miss the very functional fold down flat rear seats. The tail gait strength is much improved.
4.It is still a fairly new model. It had hiccups the first 18 months, a lot of them. Most have been fixed. Some see it as Toyota quality dropping, which may be true or may not. I remember a lot of screaming about what a piece of crap the 2nd gens were their first few years (remember the rust and tailgait issues?) Most of the issues that generate the most complaints now seem to be related to #1 above.

Frankly I see no huge motivation to move to a third gen. I had my reasons and am OK with it but if you put two equivalently equipped models with equivalent mileage side by side I would say it would be almost a toss up. I prefer the 2nd gen engine and auto transmission, 3rd gen wins on most other things (most, but not all). Frankly I might choose the 2nd gen in an access cab if it had the fold down rear seat. It seems trivial but that is something that bothers me at least once or twice a week the way I use my truck.

The only reason I would switch is if there was a logical reason. Like needing a Double Cab instead of Access, or rather drive a manual as apposed to automatic, or vise versa. Like for like would just be a waste of money in my opinion, and I know how to waste money!

Love my 5th gen. Actually sit in seats like a truck. But I will likely upgrade my 2nd gen to a 3rd gen after the 5th gen is paid for. Follow that? Lol

From 2014 to 2016 with automatic. I don't seem to notice the transmission issues I guess. For general commuting I let it hunt for the MPGs and when I'm off road I keep ECT on. *shrug*

I just traded my 15 TRDOR a week ago for a 17 TRDOR. The 2nd gen feels more like a truck than the 3rd. The 3rd gen is a more plush ride. It is noticeably quieter at highway speeds (not talking about tires), feels more solid/climate controlled and the suspension feels softer (in a good way).

Modern amenities in the 3rd., like a fob, finger touch lock and unlock, the charging station, all the tools on display, electric rear window, touch blinkers, auto up and down driver and passenger windows, better sounding audio, etc. makes the ride modern.

I do notice the tranny shifting more often but it hasn't bothered me.

I'm no farmer, I use mine as a daily, take her fishing or camping with the fam, lugging my motorcycles around, or on the occasional romp on a friend's farm, creek running and the such. Just got back from a canoeing trip with friends, put about 300 miles on the 3rd. Had that sh_t eating grin the whole time. No regrets here.

I went from a 14 to a 17! And to me it was well worth it!! Before the 16 models came out all you heard on here was why don't we have a 6 speed auto, then Toyota puts one in and now all you here is why does it always look for gear! Some people are never happy!

Laughing my ass off. Read the title and said to myself oh no. I asked as simular question and these are the type of responses I got. But I did get some really good answers that I really appreciated.
    Good luck op.
