Front and rear dif and transfercase help? 2016 Tacoma sr5 4x4

    I'm trying to figure what type of fluid I need to replace the front and rear difrential fluid and the transfer case the dealer was no help in trying to figure out what I need I have the crush washers and stuff to replace them and does the rear dif need the lsd additive any help?!?!

    For the diffs, use either toyota 75w-85 gear oil or redline 75w-85 GL5, full synthetic no additive needed. Refer to owners manual above for the correct amount. My advice is do it all yourself.

    To hijack the thread a bit, I just had my transfer case fluid changed at Toyota and the service notes state "3.4 pints 75W-90 Gear Oil" for a total of $16.80.

    Can anyone tell me the difference between 75W LF (toyota fluid) and 75w-90? The whole reason I went to the dealership to have them perform the change was because the 75W LF fluid is like $55 a liter.

    Also, 3.4 pints equals 1.7 quarts. Manual calls out 1.1. Going to talk to the service manager tomorrow, in addition to how to proceed about my transmission being 3 quarts low.

    Thanks for the help and its safe to use 75w-90 for the transfer case do you know if it need to be synthetic or not and how did you find out your transmission was low?

    Pretty sure you want to use a Grade 4 synthetic that is designed to last for a long time, such as Amsoil or Kendal. Grade 5 oils like Redline and Royal Purple are grade 5 that offer excellent wear protection, but break down sooner. Just going off an article I read some time ago.

    Additives aren't needed since there is no limited slip in your diff. It's all brake controlled LSD.

    ADS extended travel, 14" 700 lb springs, Total Chaos UCA/LCA, Dakars. 37/12.50r17 Pitbull Radial Rocker. SCS 17" SR8. 4.56s with f&r ARB lockers. Relentless sliders, full skids, debadged. 35% tint on all windows. Katzkin leather w/ heated seats
    I would use conventional 75w90. Valvoline or whatever you like and change it every 30k. I hate to break it to some people but a tacoma is not I not a performance vehicle. In those extreme conditions is the only time you will see the benefit of synthetics. If you take care of it, you will easily get 200k + with conventional and regular maintenance. Companies have really marketed synthetics because they cost more. Its just my two cents. If you want to spend the extra money for peace of mind.... Do what makes you happy. East Coast Gear Supply recommends you do not put synthetic in their replacement 3rd members.

    Dealership checked it using the overflow plug check method. Pretty sure they overfilled my transfer case & engine oil as well, will find out Tuesday.

    My truck has a button that cuts off the traction control and an auto lad light comes on so I still don't need to add and additive for that just wondering?!?

    What is Gread 4 or gl-5 I have no idea what these mean I've changed diff fluid befor but not on a Tacoma and never heard of them?!

    I used amsoil severe gear 75w90. Works perfect. It is a few bucks extra, but it's just pocket change. It definitely will offer more protection and longer fluid change intervals. It's all a matter of opinion though. Same as motor oil. If you ask for recommendations, you'll get five different answers between brands, weights and intervals. I would just do a little research and see which you like better.

    Additives were for the clutch pack in a traditional Limited Slip Differential. These trucks have open differentials and use the brakes to provide Limited Slip Differential like action. The brake grabs the spinning wheel so that power is transferred to the one that isn't slipping.

    In short.... No.

    Weather tech liners, Ranch Sierra truck cap
    75-90 for all 3 and be done. No LSD additive needed as there is no mechanical LSD, only the brake controlled LSD. Synthetic or conventional is completely up to you. I get Mobil 1 75-90w cheap from a local wholesale place so that's what I use. Will take 6qts to do all 3.
