Horn suggestions??

I'm looking to put a new horn on my '99 Tacoma. I'm in the market for a new horn because of how weak the stock horn sounds, but I'm not looking for a train horn. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

 

Pre-1995 Cadillac and select Buick sedans came with 4 Note (A, C, D, F) Delco-Remy horns. I went to the junkyard and bought a set out of a 1985 Cadillac DeVille. There were two horns installed in each fender to form the unique tone that you won't find with any other modern cars.

Makes it sound a lot more like a truck and less like a Japanese moped.

My Stock horn is plenty loud not that I use it all that much

 

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not that, I've got a couple buddies whose 1st gen stock horns sound much louder

 

I think the '99 may have just one horn, so can sound a bit like a motorcycle horn. My 2002 has two horns and is a little louder even, so I left it stock. I think adding one more horn will get you more of what you are after. The suggestions for the old caddy 4-horns is also good, but probably closer to the "train" horn sound - definitely an attention getter!

 

I just put in one of these, it's what Italian motorcycle cops use. I like the notes and it's really loud, compact, feels hefty

Damn it's like a Japanese scooter horn on STEROIDS.

 

If I'm not wrong they changed the single high tone horn in the 95-00 models to the standard sounding Low and High tone horns in the 01-04 re-design.

 

Then if you did not own the truck from new the horn might have been changed

I'm running a set of Hella Sharptone horns. They're much louder and much more aggressive than the stock horn but I think I may take the covers off and paint them black. They're not as annoying as the red Supertones that all of the subie guys run but they have a unique sound that's never failed to get anyone's attention.

 

x2 on the sharptones. Rather than one horn at 300hz and one at 500hz like the supertones, they're at 350hz and 415hz. Much closer to an OEM sounding horn.

I second the junkyard nomination of @BartMaster1234

If the yard will point you to a working battery you can test them on site. Almost any full size GM will be more robust than the Tacoma.

If you want compact and a bit fancier you might consider this

It's what I ran in my Miata, which is kin to riding a motorcycle. People don't see you. Jacked up trucks, most of which have improperly adjusted side mirrors, look right over the top of you and start changing lanes when you are already next to them. This horn saved my bacon more than once.
