When I accelerate when cruising around 40mph / @1000rmps I hear a knock/poping noise from the engine. I read the manual and it stated on page 578 "some knocking is normal when accelerating or accelerating uphill, if your engine knocks consult your Toyota Dealer."

So my question is how often does your Tacoma knock. I hear mine at least once a day.

I don't hear it knock but in winter when it was cold it sounded like lifters were chattering at higher rpm's.

I believe I read awhile back that there is a knocking sound on light loads from the fuel injectors going through it's cleaning cycle. Maybe post a video of the sound you're hearing.

I haven't noticed any knocking during my ownership. If it's a continuous thing at 40 mph I'd take it in and replicate the problem with the dealer.

Acceleration at 1K rpm going 40mph. Don't do that. What gear are you in? If my truck with M/T was going 40 @ 1K rpm I'd probably be in 5th gear. I don't generally accelerate very heavily under those conditions. Your loading the engine up pretty hard .... I would get the revs up to say 2500 rpms and hit it.... 1K rpm is basically idle .... and going 40mph you have to be in a pretty high gear. That's a big ask for any engine. The cylinders are loaded with gas and not enough air movement thru the intake exhaust ...

There's still a lot of gas left in the cylinders after spark - that causes the ping or knocking sound. It goes away pretty quick due to knock sensors and the engine timing adjustment to keep your engine from granading... down shift first or push the ETC button then hit the gas.

I do get it sometimes when I'm nursing the gas... but generally I know when and try and avoid that by down shifting upping the RPMs a litle more. This engine likes to be revved up a little to run optimally.

Based on the OP and this post, I'm thinking you have a manual.

OP, you are lugging the engine because you are in too high a gear. 1000 rpms at 40mph? Too high a gear for the load. Bad for engine.

Sadly my auto likes to idle at ~1000 rpms @ 40 mph

Well, it's different for an auto. The engine isn't directly coupled to the transmission unless the torque converter is locked. If you are cruising, it might be locked, but when you give gas, it should unlock. It won't lug like a manual.

Try running some ethanol free gas OR some Shell V-power through it and see how it performs....

I'm a fan of Seafoam. Not sure it would do much for this though. Oil is full?

If it's anything like what OV Tuned found in the 2gr-fse; the load and fuel/spark maps suck. Basically, the valvetrain can't adjust for it under higher loads. It needs 91...

...up the Octane till it stops. Easy quick solution. If persists, then dealer trip.

Nah.. I'm gonna guess it's an automatic.. Sounds exactly like something it would do. 1k rpm at 40mph that is.

    This.

I don't think I've ever seen my auto lower than 1500RPM cruising. What's your idle RPM like?

If I'm going 40 with my MT I can't get the rpms below 1000, even with 6th.

    At 40 my revs are 2-2.1k in 4th, 1700 in 5th and around 1500 in 6th.

If I'm cruising at 40 I usually am in 5th. I'd have to be hard on the gas going uphill to get knocking.

There is an injector cycle cleaning but that is at idle. If the truck is knocking going uphill, you may have had gas, a bad tune, are using too low of octane (manual recommends 87+) or need to downshift.
