    Hi all-

I'm a very conservative driver and my #1 goal is reducing operating costs. I was looking into 1st gen Double cabs, but they dont exist in long beds, so I'm forced to look for 2nd gen.

Assuming I don't care about "get up and go" or towing capacity, what configuration should I look for to maximize MPG? And any realistic estimates for best 'real world' (i.e. better than the very pessimistic EPA ratings) driving?

Small tires and no lift. If not, your looking at about 13-16 MPG, ask me how i know :bananadead:

These trucks get roughly the same or similar mileage as MOST new full-size pickups. If the size is the reason you're buying the truck (like me - city living), then fine, but don't think you're gonna get better mileage than EPA estimated. If size isn't an issue...a full size gets basically the same mileage.

If you want MPG, don't buy it.

I know.. haha, but seriously. Tacoma's are terrible when it comes to fuel efficiency. That should be one of the last needs on your list of stuff that says "Reasons to buy a Tacoma."

Stock DCLB V6 here. I get 15-17 around town, and 19-21 highway, but I do not drive conservatively.

My truck is stock plus a shell, I average about 18.5 mpg driving about 50/50 city/highway. I have gotten 22-23 mpg on a couple of tanks driving 55 mph through mountainous areas, so it is possible to match the EPA ratings. However, I don't think it is realistic to see those numbers very often if ever for most people. Driving 75+ I see mpg s drop quickly.

Go to fuelly.com and you can compare real world numbers with different makes and models. It's a good resource.

Why do you need a truck? Answer that and we'll go from there.

Not a bad question. I'd like a truck for lightweight hauling (i.e. the occasional plywood sheet, mountain bike), towing my very lightweight pop-up camper (~1200 lbs), and being able to throw 'junk' (gardening debris, mulch, etc.) into the back.

I used to have a 2.7L 2nd gen and it only got a couple of mpgs more than my V6. Good truck, but I don't miss the lack of power.
