opinions on the 6 spd Manual?

Just wondering what you guys (and gals) who drive the 6 spead manual think of it? Any issues you are having. I did a search and came up with a lot about the t/o bearing. I've only heard the "chirp" from my truck once, after starting it up. it went away after 30 seconds. My 2009 AC 4x4 6spd only has 12K.

What (if any) issues are you having with the trans?

No issues from mine. It only has about 6,000 miles on it so far though. I love the manual transmission and had to look for quite a while to find one.
Edit: Only gripe I have is that 6th gear isn't geared more toward interstate speeds.
It bothers me that the automatics "get better gas mileage" because of this.

 

no issues with mine. The noise you are hearing is the throw out bearing though, there may be a tsb on that. it will only get worse not a huge deal though

 

I 2nd this. I was really hoping 6th would be more of an overdrive. It really isn't that much different from 5th. I haven't done any major towing with it yet though so not sure if it helps there or not for highway towing.

No problems with mine and loving it, i got 8200 miles on my 2009 AC Off Road 6 Speed, hope i dont get any problems down the road

 

Got one of the first 05's off the production line. Maybe they did a better job back then... Almost 5 1/2 years and 50K (5K towing) not one issue ever w/ tranny.


Yes its geared short, has it pluses and minuses. I'm happy w/ it.

 

23 k miles on mine with no problems.

 

just hit 70k. zero problems. only thing I would change is the gearing, to me it seems a little low. maybe just bump 6th up a little more for better highway mpg.

 

I love my six speed. Just installed a trd short throw shifter. Made a nice differnce

 

I was thinking of maybe doing this. Maybe I should do some more research and give it a try.

I've got the URD short shifter installed in mine, did it 3 days after purchase. I have pictures of the comparisons in my gallery if you're interested in how much it changes it. (to me it's a must have).

There are lots of other threads on this, with a lot of information... nevertheless, here's my take on my 2009 V6 6spd (Sport)...

It doesn't shift as "crisply" as my '96 5 speed, but I have had no problems with it. One thing you need to remember... this is a truck, not a sports car. If you don't speed-shift it all the time and expect Ferrari responsiveness, it works just fine. The synchros seem a little on the slow or weak side, but if you simply shift normally, it will work just fine. I find myself double-clutching when I go into low if I'm moving at all, and it's smoother of course.... probably just because low is just that: low.

What I've had trouble getting used to is the clutch. Because throttle responsiveness pretty much sucks, it takes a lot of practice to shift smoothly especially downshifting. Then when you consider that the clutch action feels more like a 1970s GM product... shifting smoothly is an acquired talent. Upshifting even takes some getting used to, as the throttle likes to climb a bit at the shift point, just when you let off on the gas to shift.

You can get used to all of that though. It took me about 2 months and 4,000+ miles, but I'm shifting smoothly now and happy with the tranny. It's not noisy at all and in 6th on highway, I'm seeing about 20mpg. My ScanGauge told me I got 21.3 the other day, on my 35 mile commute, but I was purposely trying for good mileage.

I'm going to be switching to Red Line synthetic in the tranny soon, and it's totally possible that the shifting will be smoother because of that. I won't know until I do it though.

Bottom line, I'd say the 6 speed is fine. No worse than any other. That's what I've found anyway.

 

It shortens the throw, making the distance needed to go from 1st -> 2nd about 40% shorter, it also removes a lot of the "sloppy" feel it has, making it feel tighter. I will admit, it does make getting into reverse slightly more difficult, but the benefits completely outweigh this, and once you've got the feel of it down you don't notice the extra effort needed for R anymore.

Remember... there is always a trade-off. I'm not saying a short-shifter isn't nice to have, but when you move the pivot point of the lever, you're also increasing the shifting effort while you're decreasing the throw. That's just geometry. It may not make any practical difference. You're also causing the transmission to shift faster - you're moving the gears in the tranny quicker, because the linkage is moving faster below the lever's pivot point. Whether this ultimately has an impact on the synchro rings or other wear on the tranny, I couldn't tell you. I would only caution people that this is a truck tranny and not a sports car tranny. Go forth, do what you will, and have fun.

 

No problem with my stick here I have 46,000 miles on mine 2007. The one complaint is the sneeky clutch pedal.

 

Time will tell, no sounds at 40k here works great with the syn in it.

 

I do concur with this, the effort on the shifts does increase, especially in reverse. But I always felt the amount of effort needed from the factory was almost too easy, felt as if you could just slap it and it would fling between gears (just my personal opinion). The increase in shifting speed is still only relevant to the actual speed at which you shift. Nothing is forcing you to slam through the gears at race-car speed. But yes, the ratio of the shifting speed does change. So any extra wear and tear COULD increase (I'm not a scientist, I only play one on the internet).

Regardless, its all up to personal feel, this is my daily driver and I hate having to throw the shifter half way across the cab to find 5th (exaggerating of course). It feels better to me, not race-car like, simply "good".

I love the transmission, and even the short gears.... it is a truck, after all. I am however one of the people getting a progressively worse throwout bearing sqeak. i'm trying to wait it out a little and hopefully there will be a better solution before I need to get it fixed. I'd hate to have them put another faulty setup in only to have it deteriorate again. I have the URD short shift as well and love it. once you get in the habit of gently slapping it into reverse, as opposed to slowly pulling it, it's a piece of cake. feels really good and don't need to take my arm off the console to shift. just a flick of the wrist. Oh an my clutch pedal does squeak when its warm out. But i still wouldn't trade it for an auto. (35k miles btw)
