Why'd you buy your Sport 4x4 instead of OR ?

It does come with ATRAC which is pretty slick. It accomplishes the same goal as a front locker.

Yeah I guess you're right they are cheap...compared to the very expensive painted flares you have which along with the scoop make the Sport cost as much as one with much more function like the OR. Because you're not getting much else for that money I can tell you that.

Edit: I forgot you also get fugly Wheels...

I bought my leftover 2016 Sport a little over three weeks ago. I knew I wanted an Access Cab and really liked the manual transmission after taking it for a test drive. The OR is certainly appealing, but I'd never take it on any serious off-road adventures. The Sport seems to be a perfect for me.

A year and a half later I still love my non functional hood scoop. No regrets. Thanks for quoting my post BTW...

There's a fender flare trade thread somewhere. Easier and cheaper to do a trade. But good luck because the OR flares are hot commodity.

Personally, I think the wheels of Sport are much better looking the the OR. I honestly think there fugly - good things humans have different likes and wants.

ATRAC - okay I stand corrected - I musty have missed this on toyota.com when doing the quick builds in my zip. Overall, so HAPPY :stirthepot: I got the MT vs the auto after being on this forum for a few months.

    You're welcome! Lol

Dude, I looked at your truck and said dang that's nice, I would just add those OR fender flares to compliment the rest of the white/black.

Your truck looks 99% functional. Lol

    Like, so many.
My man, you're still missing my point. That's what YOU want from a truck. Not everyone needs, or even wants, those capabilities. Let's be honest, most Tacomas, regardless of trim, will never see serious off roading. This forum isn't exactly a representative cross section of Taco owners. Some people, most probably, just need to haul mulch from Home Depot to their flower beds or to haul their bikes. That's ok. If those people choose to spend money on a 2wd and put a lift and big ass tires on it, that is money well spent for them. They probably love that truck!
This is my third truck. I've never once wished I had a rear locker.

Although Sport and Offroad MSRPs are practically identical, it isn't necessarily true that the dealer's bottom line is identical.

I bought my Sport here in VT in June 2016. The dealer was willing to go $1k lower on the Sport than the OR. To me, it seemed like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon effect. The dealer was counting on offroad hobbyists to spend top dollar on an offroad-specific submodel and hence they weren't willing to discount their OR allocation by much. Whereas, a scooped Tacoma is just another mass market Toyota just like Highlander, 4Runner, etc., at least from a marketing perspective.

Have the rear diff howling issues been reported on a Sport?

I agree! I just bought a 2017 4x4 DCLB MT with Premium Deck package. Great looking truck! Im not a huge off road guy, but do hit the beach quite often hear in Hawaii. Plus I just can't get over those ugly black fenders and the flat hood....SPORT all the way!

I ended up getting a sport because of the cosmetic upgrades and just figured I can get air lockers down the road and then you have the best of both worlds

I went sport over off-road cause I was going to upgrade my suspension anyway. Liked the color matched fenders and of course the hood scoop. I guess missing out on the crawl mode is my only regret!

This is going to confuse the heck out of some members with the other thread lingering. But I was searching SR5. Nice to see a couple of strong wheelin' Sports in this thread.

In my case, it was purely a financial decision. Financing a vehicle above 20,000 is a tough one to deal with. I'm glad I made that personal mistake back in 2008 with my first OR. It was all about the truck, and I didn't care what I owed or the consequences outside of that. Well, that led to a '12 OR that was financed a bit more intelligently, and I also made huge payments for the first 1 1/2 years to try and break into a comfortable level, trade in value wise, as I was still feeling the sting of trading in a practically brand new 2007 2WD Prerunner that had the rear locker. That truck was crazy fun in the desert.

Well, first and foremost, the canyon views we have around here in Topanga are plentiful and are the #1 priority. That leaves little dinero left. So the new pricing for OR's was out of my league. More importantly, I need to invest my money elsewhere. And that's my hot saw builds. I just finished paying for a 2mm stroke on a 2 stroke crankshaft. $500. I still need to send out the cylinder for a bore and re-plating. Another $350. One build of a few for this month(not all strokers). And not counting custom chain grinds that run $300. Several of those are ordered in a year. It adds up quick like in this business. I could not afford to walk off the lot paying 40,000 plus for an OR and still afford to do what I love. Build and run hot saws in competitions, and enjoying our views.

Well, my decision threw me into the SR5 Gang as it had the entune and some creature comforts and what I thought was a mechanical LSD. This 4x4 system has not let me down at Hungry Valley. It has ALSD like capabilities on all fours. Awesome traction control on steep hills. Crazy part is this perspective is via the OEM Firestone street tires!!!
