The sump? what is it a racetruck? yes it would need multiple quarts over the limit to cause any troubles. Still likely no damage at that point.

Also need to remember to let the truck idle for a little bit then let it sit on a level surface for about 10 min before checking the dip. Filling then checking the dip without letting everything settle will give you an inaccurate reading.

I'm willing to bet that it looks too full because the oil didn't have a chance to work it's way into the filter. I'm not a mechanic though.

    Oil Pan bottom = Sump

The trucks have a wet sump system.

What I do for my vehicles is I use a funnel with measurements to carefully measure out the amount. Then I am usually left with an empty oil container which I do this procedure again and fill the empty container, then mark the level with a sharpie. Then I just have to pour new oil into that same container and I'll have the same amount each time.

Though, if I need to put in 6.2 Quarts...sounds like this will be annoying lol. I guess I could mark the halfway point and fill it twice.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Filter/canister probably holds quarter or so of a quart. So unless you filled it before reinstalling it it takes time for the oil to saturate. This is why you run the motor for awhile after the change before you check the level. This is also why I try and fill the filter before I put it on. Or canister in our case.

Quart bottles usually have markings on the side to see how much you poured/pouring in.

So I took a little over a half out, and it looks like there's a line on the dip stick maybe quarter inch above the low line... and a blob about half inch above the full line... ??? I have no idea.. it's just so hard to read the dipstick.. guess the sheer math of how much is in there means it's ok..

I drove it around the block and let it get up to temp after I took the oil out.

2nd pic is horrible. Cant see anything.

This pic is from transmission fluid but still applies to engine oil.

Congrats on completing your first oil change! Everyone has to start somewhere and usually questions arise during or after the maintenance is completed. You did the right thing by posting up and talking about it. Each time will get easier and you will pick up some tips and tricks along the way. I look forward to servicing my vehicles and knowing the job is done correctly.

Isn't there a low oil light that comes on if it's too low? Now I'm concerned I took too much out. I'll wait for it to completely cool off and check it cold.

I have always thought overfilling can cause foamy oil plus extra pressure in the engine that can blow seals and gaskets . This can cause leaking and seeping oil from the seals and gaskets.

Know that when its cold, it will be even lower on the dip. Its better to drive it around for 10 minutes, then let it sit for another 10-15 to where its not cold but has settled down. Then check it. When you check it this way, it should be at the max fill or close to it.

The issue is the dipstick....It will NOT read correctly unless you do this.....

Pull the D/P and wipe clean.....set it aside....have a beer.....then (if you are on a level surface), install the stick and pull it once... it WILL read correctly.

The issue is oil working itself UP the tube and messing up the stick reading. Try this OP, and then add the oil you are missing.!!

Yeah...every time I check my oil I ignore the first dipstick pull. I wiped the stick clean and then push it back in and pull out. It's the second pull from the previously wiped off dipstick that I take the reading from.

This new oil seems thinner and more transparent than 5W and 10W.

Hopefully in the near future we'll be riding around on oil free and transmission fluid free robots.

OP you might want to have a spare quart of oil in your truck in case you need to fill it more when you are out and about.

I pull the dip stick and read it/wipe it about five times or until I'm confident I'm getting a good reading.

If at first you don't succeed try try again.

This thin oil though, it's like trying to read water...
