3rd Gen Owners with King Coilovers

Oh so you had the 600 lb springs on before and sent them back to have the 650 put on.. or just had them swap at initial purchase? Either way I think you are right, gap is way too big and the collar doesn't look parallel. Cross threaded or maybe more likely the collar jumped threads.

 

I have the 2.5 extended travel coilovers with resi and compression adjusters on the front and the rear 2.5 shock with resi and compression adjuster on my truck with camburg billet upper control arms and deaver rear leaf springs and love them. They ride amazing. They are the normal springs and I'm running 285/75/17 toyo at2's


Granted this next picture is with my roof top tent and a ton of weight but you get the idea. I don't normally have any of that stuff in the back.

 

Yeah I had them swap springs at initial purchase. I had to wait about a month so the 650's could get to them. Then when they swapped the springs, they shipped them to me. So it must've been then when it happened. Because just the other day is when I tried to adjust and it wouldn't move. Was bending the punch tool.
If I can't get it, i will contact them. Hopefully they can help me out if it was on their end.
If not then I hope I can somehow only replace the threads and collar on the coilover

 

Well you gave it a good shot. It might be best to let them take a look if need be although Im sure you are bummed to have to come to this point.

 

Yeah tomorrow I'm going to wrench on it. Remove the coilover, and try turning the collar back up hopefully it'll sit right
I'll probably end up removing the spring as well so I can spin it all the way up and down. Hopefully the threads didn't get too damaged
I'll hopefully have an update tomorrow. Also hope it doesn't resort to having to contact vendors and manufacturers

 

I'm looking into a custom Alcan spring pack. Nice spring rate for off-roading then adding a set of air helper springs for load and towing. Would love to hear if anyone has tried this setup?

 

So Micah at DSM told me that the spring should always be compressed when adjusting the collar nut, because the spring is putting all that tension against the collar and most likely what caused it to jump a thread. Not only that but he said we aren't supposed to remove the Allen all the way, it opens the collar too much and can cause it to jump a threas. So my option is to send it in. From Texas to cali. Or find someone here that will repair kings.

 

Buy a spring compressor and do it yourself. Or take it to a shop that has one. It wouldnt take longer than 5 minutes to fix

 

Yeah got it done. My buddy works at firestone, compressed the spring. Just spinning it didn't fix it, we had to use 2 prybars to slightly open the collar and it sat correctly in place. Everything is all good now fellas!
Threads weren't even damaged. King makes some quality stuff

 

Glad to hear man, at the same time, now you are a little more familiar with the coilover having had to do this unfortunate process. Was it indeed the removal of the collar bolt that caused this?

 

Yes I would say it was. Complete removal of the Allen bolt opened the collar as much as it could, and the pressure from the spring pushing up on it must've knocked half of the collar into the upper thread. As much as we turned it, it wouldn't go back to normal. Only way was to pry the collar open.

 

Pretty close to pulling the trigger on some Kings but debating on adjusters or not. Are they really worth it? Since mine will mostly be a daily driver w/occasional off-road here and there, I want a decent soft ride on the street. Are the standard non adjusters soft enough for a smooth ride? Should I only get adjusters in the front? @wyant @Coot83 @uhplifted thanks in advance for the help!!

 

I personally don't think they are worth it, granted I don't have them, but from what I've heard they're not worth it. If you have the money and want them go for it. But I think you could put the extra $300(?) towards something else. Like more patches

Serious note though, I love them on and off road. Zero problems to date.

It's a world of the difference, for me at least. I like a stiffer ride on the street since I'm not running sway bars but once I get to the dirt I turn them down. Rides like a dream.

 

I would prefer a softer ride on the street and plan on leaving my sway bars. So wondering if the non adjusters would be good enough on softness.

 

I'm sure people on here have that setup and run fine. I helped @Coot83 install his but he upgraded to LT shortly after

 

Nice! Just noticed that you literally have the same white Rigid ditch lights and white brackets. I have them too!! Great minds think alike lol

 

Yup, I painted them with dupli color paint match so it's perfect. Did you do fogs or spots?
