That's exactly what it looks like, but the seal is fine. Even the bearing is fine. I checked to make sure the diff breather wasn't clogged. The only two things I haven't done are replace the axle shafts and the axle housing. From what I've read, it's tough to bend a shaft, so I'm assuming the axle housing is bent. I spoke with the previous owner and he said he thought the truck might have been wrecked before he owned it and that bent the axle. He said he's rebuilt the rear end to no avail. I'm thinking it's gotta be the housing.

It could be the axle as well. Where the seal rides on the axle, the seal actually cuts a groove in the axle - allowing oil to leak past.

The area of the housing where the seal sits could also be scored or out of round, and leaking. Sealer around the outside of the seal will fix this problem.

I would check and replace the axle before replacing the housing.

However, if you do decide to replace the housing, it is very straightforward. Driveshaft, brakelines, electrical, breather, e-brake cables and u-bolts.

Hmm that's odd. Usually that is a dead give away of the seals being gone

You could always take the axle out and check. It's really straight forward, brake lines and then a few bolts and clips if you have ABS

Oh, and to answer your question - yes.

    It is really straightforward.

Only thing is I've already ordered a housing. I guess I can pull the axle and check for grooves and the seal area being misshaped. Will I be able to tell this with the naked eye? I'd love to be able to send the $400 housing back

If it is really grooved, you will be able to see it. Also, you can run your fingernail over it and feel it. If anything looks or feels worn, the axle is a problem and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Sometimes, you can sleeve the axle to give the seal a fresh surface to work on. However, sleeves don't always work as expected. And, I have never sleeved a Tacoma axle, so I don't have direct experience.

If the axle has a lot of miles on it, and/or abuse, it is probably a better option to just replace it.

If the axle is the issue, I'll just replace it. Be prepared for pictures in the near future lol.

Post a close-up of the axle surface under the seal.
