I just keep dumping what I can into equipment. Whenever I sell rights, or do some portrait work, it goes towards equipment. I really want the 400mm f/2.8, but that thing is high dollar. I could probably justify it with the swim photography I do, but it's hard to shell out that kind of cash.

    ahh okay.

well. let us shatter your auto mode world :D

The three modes that i would suggest playing with are AV/TV/and eventually Manual.

AV is call Aperture priority. You get to pick the aperture you want the camera to shoot at. Lets say..f8. Then depending on what you focus on, it will do the math for you and fire at the shutter speed needed to keep the photo at f8. Some things can change this like what you focus on and focus mode. But let not get into that for now.

TV mode is shutter priority. So now you pick a shutter speed..say 1/200th sec. And it does the match to figure out what aperture to set the lens at to make that happen.

Now if you leave ISO in auto it'll also take that into account. However, i'd suggest setting the ISO to 100 for as much as possible. For over cast go to 320-400. remember the higher the iso the more sensor noise you'll get.

Manual mode is what it is. You set the apeture and shutter to what you want. Thats more advanced and depending on your camera body, may not be ideal to tweak fast on the fly if you don't have the knobs at your finger tips to change those setting instantly.

Id play around with Aperture priority mode for starters. I use that and full manual mostly. You can fiddly with the ISO manually too to see how it changes how the camera shoots as well as focus modes.

I'll have to play with those and see how it turns out, I have used manual mode and TV mode before for night shots but it's been over a year since I played with any of the modes (Or even used the camera actually) that I decided auto mode would probably be best right now.

I'll probably be in this thread learning and posting more around june, moving to a new area with lots of great opportunities for flora and fauna shots, as well as a friend who said she would model for me, so I feel like I should take the initiative to learn as much as I can.

I can show you lots of DSLR pics of my truck and other vehicles, and explain how I shot them, but I'm nowhere near Kansas.

Canon EOS, handheld, with a 22mm prime (non-zoom) lens, 1/800 at f/14, ISO 400. Shot in 'raw' mode, camera set for fully automatic ('P'), some exposure correction done in Adobe Lightroom to balance the shadow vs highlights....

Hellooo, it's me. hahha. Thanks for the compliment! I've taken some time off the GS since I got the Tacoma. Now I have two toys to play with, but since the GS is pretty much done, It looks like the Taco will get some love.

This was my favorite bike though, it belonged to my father in law who we lost after a long battle with cancer almost a year ago. This weekend his best friend who he left the bike to put it in the show and it won a class award, Larry would have absolutely loved it. RIP Larry and fuck cancer...
