I haven't checked it closely but I do know I've gotten 17.5 before and the truck is relatively new. I'd say 20 is possible but you would have to be very light on the go pedal! :)

I've calculated my running average since purchasing my Taco last May at 18.36 MPG. That's city and highway combined mileage and with the truck being run through four full seasons of Canadian weather, including some VERY cold temps.

My worst tank yielded 13.32 MPG and that was at -30 to -40. My best tank yielded 21.72 MPG and that was pure highway driving in the summer. Most of the time I'm 18-19 MPG in mixed driving. Heck, I even get that same 18 MPG on the highway towing my boat.

As for there being "no excuse for a small truck getting the mileage the Tacoma does", I think people need to realize that the Tacoma isn't exactly a small truck. Compared to today's 1/2 tons it is, but my Tacoma isn't that much smaller than my 1997 1/2 ton was. The 4.0 isn't exactly a small engine either. It's a big V6 with allot of grunt and sorry folks, it's going to use gas. It uses a heck of allot less fuel than the 4.6 V8 in my old F-150 did and it delivers a much more performance oriented package in doing so. What's the problem again?

Ive seen as high as 23 all highway with the stock steels. But since the upgrade to fj wheels highest is 20.7. Compared to my previous vehicle (5.7 Tundra) never saw 17 driving all highway. I think anywhere around 20 for a V6 truck is fine.

I dunno about the Ford getting 24mpg. Is that correct 600 miles on a 25 gallon tank. The last time I seen a test done by Ford it got the sticker and they compared it to other full size trucks (Like the Tundra, Ram, Sierra and Titan). My friend has one and gets way less than whats on the sticker. I dunno if it's becuz the Hawaii air but I think V8 are great if you really need them. As far as mine Tacoma, at the beginning for some reason the mileage stank really bad (Like steady 15's). But recently I have been getting a solid 17-18 which is close to what the sticker says. I don't do highway because everything in where I live is close, but I can image getting 20-21 if I did. btw that's with 265-70-16 BFG's. The only reason I would buy a Ford right now is if I needed a Diesel. I am the daily driver who works in retail, so I don't need to tow anything around and the weekend warrior who goes camping and offroading once in a while. I hope that helps you.:)

My 2010 auto was shifting a little rough. When I turned the corner slowly without stopping and begun to accelerate it would hang up in first gear before shifting at a higher rpm. Took it to the dealer and had them reprogram the computer. It seems to drive and shift much smoother since this has been done. Prior to this was averaging around 19 mpg combined driving. Will be interesting to see if mileage improves.

I get 20.5 at least all the time got 23 a few times---seems to be better in the winter with the AC off and I run reg. gas and avoid E85 which seems to give less gas mileage. I drive like an old guy even my 8 year old grandson says so. My 2005 double cab short bed 2WD is stock with 105000 miles on it and runs well. Just removed the secondary filter which has a weird kind of corrision on it ??? and it seem to run smoother I was very careful taking it off in case I want to put it back. I'll be checking the mileage to see if it has any effect.

My 05 DC LB gets 18-19 in town and 20-21 on the interstate. Pretty close to the sticker, and that is with 110K miles on it.

Exactly. And some of the people bitching about low mpg or calling people like you and me liars don't even have 5,000 on it to fully break it in.

Dont you guys watch Mythbusters??? lol.

Seriously though, they did a special where they tested tailgate down vs tailgate up, and the truck with the tailgate up actually got better mileage. I'd assume it would be similar with a tonneau cover, though they didn't go that far with the experiment.
