    In a MT, 6th is 0.71. In an AT, 0.55 I believe.

The manual gearing is practically perfect for this truck. Ironically, the 2nd gen AT is geared very similar to the 3rd gen MT, with the added 5th gear of 0.85.

I bet dollars to donuts if you were to pull a 4.0 out of a 2nd gen and drop in a 3.5, you wouldn't be able to tell a difference.

6th gear has been known as useless since the first TW member posted about taking delivery of his new 3rd gen

Thinking about this thread, I filled up about an hour from home last night. Other than leaving the huge gas station (Buc-eees), three stop lights and a few turns it was all highway. There was some traffic but the computer showed the trip at 55 minutes with an average speed of 64 mph. I did let it scrub speed going up hills, using the down hill to gain it back but nothing radical. Tank average when I got home was 24.3. For the last 3,4xx miles (5,4xx on truck) it shows 22.2 average.

This morning I went to my cities hazardous material disposal day. Several starts only to move 40'. When I got back home the tank average was down to 23.0, long average had dropped to 22.1. I think that is pretty typical of what someone can expect from a 2wd Tacoma driven easily.

In flat land Texas yes. In higher elevation or mountainous areas probably not. Overall average is about 18 to 19mpg

That is pretty much supported by data at fuelly.
Heck my 4.0 Frontier averages that.

I drive a lot for work but its mostly all back roads and two lane highways so the average speed is 50mph. This seems to be the sweet spot for the truck as I consistently get 25-26mpg on those trips. However, when I get on the highway it drops drastically to 19-20mpg unless I really watch my speed. I have no complaints though as with mixed driving I get the rated 21mpg or a little better.

2017 DCSB 4cyl Auto 4x2 with stock tires and suspension. I removed the front air dam early on but didn't notice that much of a difference.

Good point. Very true. The "hills" here are bumps. Total elevation change over the trip last night was under 200' from high to low.

Just passed 15K on a trip to Vegas from OC and got 23.2 MPG. This is the best mileage I have gotten so far (2016 2WD Limited, stock).

    side rails,
Have found you can't rely on the indicated MPG, fill up and calculate MPG the old fashioned way. Much more accurate, but, doubt you will be off significantly. Still impressive.

My average tank is usually 16.5 to 17 mpgs. I get about 21-22 on highway trips but heavy traffic kills my mpgs. Even though I'm easy on the gas.

I've learned to ignore and change the screen on mine.

After several fill ups (i fill up when I have about a qtr tank left) I found that the screen reading was usually 0.5 MPG less than actual when I calculated trip miles and gallons.
If i filled up and drove straight into city traffic during rush hour my readout will be around 13.8 - 14.8 MPG. By the time I'm getting ready to fill up again the read out is up at 15.8 - 16.2 MPG.

If I filled up and drove with no traffic and mostly green lights my readout will be 22 - 25 MPG. Then we're back down to 15.8 - 16.2 by the time it's time to fill up. Calculating actual miles and gallons filled i'm getting 16.3 - 16.7 MPG.

That's about as good and as bad as it's going to get.

That's pretty much exactly what I am getting as well. I think the people who are getting "25 mpg" need to do some real evaluations lol.

I filled up tonight. Tank average was 23.1, and average for the last 3,669 miles is 22.5.

I do take advantage of fuel cut on deceleration. Basically when the torque converter is locked up and the truck is moving, if you let completely off the gas, the injectors stop pumping fuel. You have to watch your mirrors doing this so as not to inconvenience someone else.

You can see the mileage here. I'll take another one next full-up along with the number on the pump, to get real numbers.

My per tank average read out is very close. Filled up yesterday 375 miles and put in 18.5 gallons. Dash was saying 20.4 for the tank and hand calculated at 20.2. I don't always calculate by hand by when I do it is +-0.5 MPG.

Have temps warm up has been much better for fuel economy. In the winter with temps -10 to 30 degrees always in 4high and pushing though snow I was averaging around 16. Now that it has warmed up back into the low 20s again.

I have about 500 Miles on mine and I seem to be hovering right around 20MPG, I have yet to figure it out by hand yet only going by the computer.

Driven for maximum economy, this is what these trucks are capable of.
    slpg1v_40b1865dc92899c96fa53b9af0bf81ca00c7831c.gif

All highway save for the last mile, and trip average speed was 60 a few miles before home. I got up to 75 a couple time banking speed for the hills, but generally drove in the low 60 mph range.

I've noticed this thing takes to headwinds like a cat to water. I was driving NorCal a couple weeks ago with a brutal 30mph headwind and it tanked my mileage to 13 over the course of a couple hours. Same stretch I was an easy 18 at 72mph other times.
