OP here. I passed on the original truck described in the first post. It is a lot of miles, and even though KBB says it was in the 6-6500$ range, I just can't swallow putting down that kind of cash for such high miles. But most importantly, it's not *exactly* the truck I am looking for, and this process helped me realize what that is: DCLB. Unfortunately it seems that 1st gen DCLB's are almost nonexistent, so it looks like I'll need to up my budget and step into 2nd gen. Ah well.

I do appreciate all of the perspectives from this forum. Thank you.

If that's a trdor......it's one of the rarer tacoma around. There are like 3-4 of us on these forums.
If all the major maintenance has been done...I don't see an issue. I'm at about 170k miles. All put on by me.

Edit: I don't see a TRD sticker on it....maybe it was removed.

    never find one for that.

I sold a 98 with 220K miles in 07 for that and that was before "1st Gen. bubble".

    What did we learn here?

Try and pay S10 prices for a Tacoma and when selling a Tacoma ask Tacoma prices.

They just stopped calling them Prerunners. They still make 6 lug 2wd Tacomas on the same frame as the 4x4's but they no longer use the name 'Prerunner'. That ended with the 2nd gens.

They stopped making 2wd 5 luggers though. Basically it's just simplified. Now you either get a 2wd Taco or a 4x4 one. Both optional in OR or Sport (or base SR/SR5).

That explains it. I find myself still trying to sort out all the different Tacoma variations.

Does 5 lug refer to 5 lug nuts on the wheels. Apologies for all the questions at once here but this comes up in other discussions.

yeah, back in the day (pre-3rd gen) you could get a 5 lug 2wd Tacoma (not built on the 4x4 frame so it sat lower to the ground).

    Arrggh.. you're killin' me.

4wd is becoming more important the more I think about it. I drove up to ski resorts/over mountain passes about 1x per week in the snowy season...sounds like Taco's are pretty crap in the snow without 4wd.

But yeah, maybe I shoulda bought it ;)

I know the OP passed, but it looks like it was a prerunner (6-lug) by the Sequioa wheels on it. It's a perfect candidate for a a drivetrain swap to make it into a sweet off-road vehicle. If I had a garage, tools, and time, I would snag it and swap in a solid axle up front, swap out the engine for something weird and bob the bed. Like so:
    p4pb11907352.jpg

I believe you are correct. 1st gen Double cabs were only offered as 6-lugs (Prerunner or 4x4) with the 4cyl 2.7L or the V6 3.4.

There is only one in the world that I know of that I found on the internet years ago...

    make one, somebody.

A rotted frame truck would be a good start.

That truck makes no sense to me. If you need to haul 4-5 people while carrying a load in the bed why in the world would you get a Tacoma? That's like buying a Ford Excursion to haul groceries.

    Maybe that's why they're rare.

Well, if that's in a remote area (likely, judging by the scenery), I'd want a Tacoma for the reliability. It wouldn't make sense to pay someone to extend the frame and swap on a 6' bed, but if you or your buddies could do the job, and you had access to a junkyard, it makes sense. I bought my 1st gen Double Cab so that I could carry 4 people, 4 mountain bikes, and gear on camping trips. Nothing else compares in the size range that has the capacity, capability off-road, reliability or gas mileage. Maybe a 4-Runner, but I found those prices to be comparable to the Tacoma and I wanted a truck bed with more cargo capacity than an SUV.
