OME BP-51 Install Report and Height Adjustment

Damn this pre-load thing is really hard to nail down it seems. My kit is in the mail on its way to me, but I have most of the gear i am throwing on as well... So ill have:

65lb bumper, 75lb winch, I have a rack on the the Cab maybe around 45ish lbs with no weight on it, and 26lb IFS skid, and 20lb Mid Skid. Plus a 100lbs of Rock Sliders (50 each side).

Think my preload should be more around the 16-17mm mark since all my armor is Aluminum? This is on a 2016 DCLB TRD OR taco

Not to mention in the rear i have a Cap w/ Rack installed, and a Fuel tank skid. So I will probably be leaving in all the leaf's that come with the Dakars.

 

Sounds like you have the perfect amount of weight to level out the truck and have a smooth ride. I wouldn't touch the preload. It comes from the factory set for a front bumper and winch. My truck should sit perfectly level once I get some weight in the back like you have. Ya, leave in all the leafs since you got a cap and skid plate.

 

Extra leaf? Or all the leafs that come with the dakar leaf pack?

 

I meant all the leafs. There is an option to remove a leaf if you want a smoother ride. I kept it in for when I put more weight in the back such as with a cap or rear bumper.

 

Only thing that worries me is I have an aluminum bumper, and arb says it comes configured for what I would think is their steel bumper and a winch and their steel armor. That sounds like a good 50 or more pounds more than I would have.

 

Well I only have their bumper, no winch right now. You would only be 30 pounds lighter when it came to the bumper/winch combo. I didn't notice any difference in ride before and after the steel skid plate. Your two skids weight is about the same as my steel ifs.The only change was when I added the rock sliders, those improved the ride quite a bit. Plus you have the roof rack weight. You should be fine.

 

Yea that is true, the roof rack should hopefully put me just about right. Suppose I'll try the 20mm and report back to you all. Prob be in about a week or 2 .

I noticed the passenger side lean the other day. Came back to the thread and saw others had the same issue. Is this normal with all other high end kits? I'm just really annoyed at this point. I talked with ARB about how stiff the ride was and they told me to go down to 5mm on the front and remove a leaf in the rear which is what I did a few weeks ago. Why wouldn't they tell me to set the passenger side to 7mm? Looks like I have to take my truck in again to have it adjusted.

 

Anyone have the answer for this. Very curious. Thank you

Thanks for all the info in here. I am deciding between this kit and a Fox 3 kit w/ full dakar. I have a CX HD cap, RTT and will be adding a bed drawer system soon. I would like to add no more than 2 inches and be relatively level. Seems like full dakar in rear and 5mm setting up front may do the trick and provide a ride on the softer side. Am I missing something? Also any views on this kit v. the fox kit?

 

With that weight you can look to AAL to the Dakar.

D29XL I believe, adds like 300 pounds payload but dont quote me.

D29XL I believe adds an additional 1" of lift, the assumption is the added weight would cause them to sag a bit.

 

Thanks a lot will def look into that. My understanding is that dakars w/out the AAL would provide ~2 in. in the rear and be more than suitable for the weight I have...

 

It would be quicker to add a .25 spacer from wheelers, toytec or headstrong offroad, most people have the lean on the drivers side, not the passenger side.

 

Got off the phone with ARB tech support on the rear shock limiting factor with the Dakar springs. They said that the shock is designed to limit the down travel of the spring so that you don't break you brake lines and abs wires and what have you.

Basicly i took that is that the shock is designed to be strong enough to handle limiting the down travel of the axle.

But i suppose when you go with a more extended travel shock you need to lengthen your brake lines and whatnot. But they did say the BP-51 does have more shock length than stock.

Does anyone know if you install your suspension with one weight of the truck and then you install some more accessories that change the weight of the front end, if you need to re-align the wheeels after every time you change the weight load?

Presumably say leaving the 20mm of preload then installing without a winch. Then get an alignment after installing the shocks. Then you add a winch in a week or two.. would you need to re-align?
