    Get the v6
I had a double cab in the 4 and 6 cylinder configuration.
I saw better mpg in my 6 cylinder. I averaged 17-18.

Best advice I can give you is to keep the truck stock (no crazy lift/bigger tires) and keep the rpm under 2k on the freeway.

This should pull the tacoma just fine.

    And still get about 25mpg

Get the 4.0 V-6. Stay away from heavy aggressive tread large tires and drive conservatively. Your driving style will have more effect than anything else. My 07 DC is 4X4 and I buy moderately aggressive AT tires for it. I've put almost 180,000 miles on it. If I drive conservatively I've gotten as much as 22 mpg hwy. But just under 20 mpg is the norm. For my normal daily commuting I'm just under 18 mpg. If you go with a 4X2, stay with stock size hwy tires and drive it right expect 1-2 mpg better. If you were to go with the 4 cyl you might add another 1-2 mpg. But the loss of performance would be unacceptable to me.

Honestly, that is about as good as you can ask for if you want a truck. If that mileage is unacceptable then you don't need a truck, but any car or SUV that would pull a trailer to haul the things you want to haul won't be significantly better.

17.5 mpg stock tires with 6 speed manual, but on the freeway more like 16.5-17 mpg cus the gearing is whack on the manuals. Oh and I don't drive like grampa. Still beter than the 12-14 in the tundra :bananadance:

Today in my 2015 DCLB v6 bone stock Limited I had 23.6 mpg over 123 mi from Tuners Falls MA to Dover NH via Rt 2, I495, I95, Rt 16.

Speed was + 5mph over limit either 60 or 70 mph.

But the 4 cyl only running about 15mpg
16 at best. We don't buy these trucks for MPG. Reliability longevity

Just drove from Philadelphia to Raleigh (430ish miles) in my 2015 V6 DCSB. Got 18mpg. Avg speed was 78-80. Drivetrain is stock.

E-rated tires prevent me from ever seeing the 20s. I'm sure if I did 65 the entire way I'd get close, but I just don't have that in me LOL

Also need to add what tranny you have, the automatic is better than the manual by far. At 70 MPH my RPM's are 2600 or 2700.

Wow that's tough. Auto tranny sits at 2500rpm at 80mph for me.

Same area, about the same results. I get about 19 in the summer, 16-17 in the winter.

That said, I get 14 if I idle at all in the winter or drive ~80 on highways in Central Maine. Keeping it under 2000 RPM is usually the best bet.

If I stay under 2000k on the freeway I'll get pulled over for driving to slow o_O

65MPH or less gets me 18-19, 75MPH I get 16-17. 80MPG yeah I stop adding over 75MPH. In the winter I just don't want to add it up! less than 16 I know that. Mine is a 13' SR5 with 3.73 gears and a 6 speed.

soo 65-75 mph and you got almost 24 mpg.. doubt it.

How did you calculate this. Only accurate way is if you just filled up before the trip then filled up after the 123mi, if not its not accurate.

I suggest P rated tires, or something with very low rolling resistance. Get some FN 16" 5 star wheels or something of the like; they are super lightweight at only 18.9lbs a piece. Lightweight wheels with low rolling resistance and light weight tires would net you better fuel mileage and even power.

Get the Front lip from a X-runner tacoma and install it; it'll help with reducing drag underneath the truck; not sure by how much but a little bit helps. Tonneau cover. Electric fan conversion.

Just some quick suggestions, anyhow that's how I would do it.

Yeah, 6 speed revs high! I think my auto is about 70 MPH at 2000 RPM.
